The U.S. military has launched retaliatory strikes against Iran
following the downing of a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache attack helicopter near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The Incident The Crash:
The Apache gunship went down on Monday night off the coast of Oman while conducting routine patrols in regional waters.
The Cause:
President Donald Trump accused Iran of shooting down the aircraft. U.S. officials later confirmed that the Apache plunged into the sea after a collision with an Iranian Shahed attack drone. Investigators are still evaluating whether the collision was intentional or a reckless accident.
The Crew:
Both American pilots survived the crash completely uninjured.
Historic Sea Drone RescueThe two aviators were rescued in a first-of-its-kind operation by the U.S. military.
The Vessel:
An uncrewed, 24-foot robotic surface drone named the Corsair located the crew.
The drone is manufactured by Saronic Technologies and operated by the U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet's AI-focused Task Force 59.

The pilots spent approximately two hours in the water before being retrieved by the sea drone and subsequently hoisted onto a rescue helicopter.
