RAIL SAFETY WEEK - 10-16 AUGUST 2026
"It starts with YOU to make a difference!"
Whether big or small, fast or slow, trains are EXTREMELY dangerous, and pose a risk to your safety. It is essential for road users and pedestrians to obey the signs and markings at Road and Pedestrian Crossings, and stop, look and give way to oncoming trains.
The impact of a train vs vehicle/pedestrian collision can cause SERIOUS physical and mental harm or even death to both you, those nearby and those crewing and onboard the train.
Over the past 25 years there have been OVER 2000 fatalities on Australian mainline railways alone, with countless more worldwide. There have also been many fatalities around the world from car/pedestrian collisions with tourist/heritage trains on both full size railways and small/narrow gauge railways.
Whether it's a 6000 ton loaded freight train, a 200 ton Metro train or a 35 ton narrow gauge steam train, if you ignore the marked signage and pull out in front of it, you will get struck by it, resulting in potential injury and/or fatality to yourself or those on-board.
Some quick facts:
-Trains CANNOT swerve out of the way.
-Trains carry a LOT of momentum and cannot stop quickly.
-Visible Signage is ALWAYS placed at every level crossing.
Always remember:
-DO NOT speed across level crossings or pull out without looking and obeying road signs/markings.
-DO NOT use the tracks as a place to stand or walk, even if it seems like a shortcut.
-DO NOT trespass on railway property/corridors. It is private property for a reason, to keep you safe!
Remember these key facts and you will protect both yourself, those around you and those on-board.
See the sign. Obey it.
