Watch this before you travel Australia | 10 lessons in 2 years

After 2 years and over 80,000 kms living on the road, here are the 10 things we genuinely wish someone had told us before we set off around Australia.

From the vehicle you choose to the gear you waste money on, weather that changes everything, staying safe in remote spots and the real costs no one talks about, this is the honest chat we wish we'd had before we started. If you're planning a lap, a van build, or your first big trip, hopefully these help with whatever is gnawing in the back of your mind about travelling this stunning country 🙂

We've been living and working full time in our custom Mercedes Sprinter van "Panda" for over 12 months and this is the full tour. Our little apartment on wheels and built to go off-grid, she's loaded with solar, an epic 12V system, an external hot shower, plenty of water storage and beautifully crafted cabinetry.

In this video:
→Full walk-through of Panda's custom build
→Off-grid electrical system & solar setup
→External hot shower & water system
→Kitchen, sleeping, and storage setup

Panda is a 2018 Mercedes Sprinter MWB 2WD 2.1L diesel - converted into a full-time home for two people and all our adventure gear.

If you're thinking about van life in Australia, this one's for you.

Well it has been another eventful week!

A water bottle spilled into the passenger dash cubby. You would think it be a non issue right? Except in a Mercedes Sprinter, that cubby sits directly above the EZS and CPC modules. Two of the most critical electronic control units in the van. One controls the ignition and key recognition. The other controls the entire powertrain - sound familiar?

Water tracked straight through and into the connectors. Within minutes we had a “Do Not Shift Gears” warning, the van wouldn’t start, wipers going on their own, and multiple sensor fault codes firing simultaneously.

The best part 🙃 this is a known issue or defect and Mercedes solution is a thin plastic cover or hat. No sealed case or IPX proof box , just a hat to ‘divert ‘ the water away.

$700 cleaning bill and a $2.5k replacement quote that’s one expensive drink 😅

Anyway we went the full replacement route because corrosion doesn’t stop and we don’t want the van sh****ng itself outback somewhere and having to foot a 500km tow bill.

Anyways here’s to hoping Panda is back into it a few weeks from now 🤙

2 days off-grid | Canoeing the Glenelg River, Victoria

We've done van life, surfing, hiking and bikepacking — but a self-guided canoe trip down the Glenelg River? That's a first for us, and we had absolutely no idea what we were in for.
We hired a canoe through Paestan Canoe Hire (couldn't recommend them more — super easy, super accommodating), met another couple doing the same thing, spotted so many koalas from the water, somehow convinced ourselves to swim in a river we couldn't see the bottom of, and broke in our new tent for the first time. Oh, and made some great new friends around the campfire.

The big question the whole way down: were we going to make it without tipping the thing over?

Watch to find out.

We broke down in Adelaide just as we were about to start a 4 day bike packing adventure on the Mawson Trail.
