There was something incredibly special about photographing The Nervous Atmosphere by Zoë Barry. Zoë Barry

A solo performance performed Her Majesty's Theatre Ballarat exploring three personal encounters with lightning, and the strange events that followed. Through cello, composition and theatre, Zoë captures that feeling of awe, rupture and isolation that comes from confronting forces far beyond our control.

I was lucky enough to capture some of those moments during the dress rehearsal — watching the connection between artist and instrument unfold right in front of me.

One of those shoots where you don't just photograph the performance… you feel it.

One of my favourite images. This is Zoë Zoë Barry during the dress rehearsal for The Nervous Atmosphere, just before the performance.

I wanted to capture that first moment of practice, before everything came together. There’s something really special about watching an artist connect with their instrument — that quiet moment where the musician, the instrument and the music almost become one.

For me, that connection is what makes this image so special. 🎻
