We took the free tour of City Hall today given by Museum of Brisbane to check out this piece by Sofles project managed by Tervo commissioned by Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner Brisbane City Council and painted to celebrate the history of Brisbane City Hall and the people who built it. If you look closely ⏪️⏪️ you will see signatures of current chefs, security guards, kitchen staff and cleaners and Sofles.

Interestingly this artwork was inspired by a piece of history in city hall. During the renovations completed in 2013, workers uncovered a wall of signatures. These were signatures that were written, without permission, by World War II soldiers and people who worked in the building in the 40s.

This mural is a work by Catalan street artist Lily Brick ʟ ɪ ʟ ʏ ʙ ʀ ɪ ᴄ ᴋ located at Plaça de la Pastora in Vallcarca, Barcelona, painted over two days in July 2021.

The Fundació Atra mental health center commissioned the artwork as part of a community project to introduce mural art and collaborate with the center’s participants.

This mural tells us about the prejudices and labels with which we mark certain people. In the author’s own words: “Prejudice can harm fragile people to the point of breaking them, be careful with the labels we impose on people, they do not allow us to see beyond them.”

This striking image shows the famous street art mural titled “Peace Guard” created by Shepard Fairey ☮️

The piece features a stylized woman in military uniform holding a r***e with a carnation flower blooming directly out of the barrel. This imagery serves as a powerful tribute to Portugal’s historic Carnation Revolution (Revolução dos Cravos) of April 25, 1974, a peaceful military coup that overthrew the authoritarian Estado Novo dictatorship with almost no violence, heavily symbolized by citizens placing carnations into the barrels of soldiers’ guns.

Originally painted in July 2017 in partnership with Lisbon’s Underdogs Gallery Underdogs Gallery the mural was later repainted in the summer of 2023 with a refreshed, vibrant blue color palette.

Artist Spotlight: Vhils Vhils watch the short video then swipe ⏪️⏪️ to see all 📸📸

Vhils is a globally acclaimed Portuguesestreet artist and urban creator. He is best known for his revolutionary “subtractive” carving technique, peeling back and chiseling layers of urban walls, plaster, posters, and concrete to reveal striking, large-scale human portraits.

Rather than painting or adding new material to a surface, Vhils chips away at existing layers—using chisels, pneumatic drills, acid, and even controlled micro-charges of explosives—to expose the hidden material history underneath.

His portraits of anonymous locals or historical figures act as a commentary on rapid urbanization, homogenization, and the layers of human experience embedded within city architecture.

Beyond outdoor building facades across more than 30 countries, his practice spans carved doors, billboard paper, metal, wood, video installations, and styrofoam.

“The World Begins with Every Kiss” (El món neix en cada besada), a famous photo-mosaic mural created by photographer Joan Fontcuberta and ceramist Toni Cumella 2014 for Catalonia’s tricentenary.

The artwork features 4,000 individual ceramic tiles that together form the image of a pair of lips kissing. Each tiny tile is printed with a personal photo submitted by local citizens depicting moments of freedom, joy, and daily life.

This striking artwork is titled “In Your Face - Belfast Spring” by the talented Dutch street artist duo Studio Giftig Studio Giftig

It was created in 2023 for the annual Hit the North street art festival. Because the mural sits on the side of a former historic linen mill, the artists filled the scene with swirling blue flax flowers—the very plant used to manufacture traditional Irish linen. In local tradition, flax also symbolizes a fresh start, new beginnings, and renewal.
