Love a bit of black and white.

Okay this one’s kind of stacked as I’ve had a bit on and have fallen behind in my daily missions, so have combined several missions in one for this pic. First, this week’s mission of lighting mouths for portraiture, in this case using a large diffused fill directly in front for a soft flat light eliminating shadows. Next up, exploring symbolism of cultural conventions, using gold as symbol of wealth, status, prestige etc combined with lips that carry associations with sensuality, femininity, fashion. Gold lips - perfection, expense, glitz, glamour, and an unnatural colour that adds the suggestion of fakery, or gilt coverings, gold as a fashion accessory, suggesting fashion as a shallow money making industry. Combined with a camera, which alludes to fashion, adding connotations of voyerism, obsession, the desire for perfection and unattainable things. Lastly, using the golden section for composition, I couldn’t resist a photo nerd pun combining it with a gold subject. Also, I kind of like how the camera looks like a mechanical cyclops with a human mouth…

One month of shooting a photo a day using the mission prompts from https://the-daily-capture.base44.app. So many and varied shots that I wouldn’t have thought to take otherwise - I get so caught up in producing photos for clients and sticking to deadlines that I forget to take photos for myself. It’s really helped me see differently, live in the moment and find inspiration in the everyday environment. I’ve been loving the excuse to get creative and use visual clues to tell stories, and learning so much in the process. Surprisingly it’s also been a great exercise in mindfulness and improving observation skills. Most of all I’ve been having so much fun the playing the game and taking on the challenges. Exploring rhythm in photography and human impact in the landscape.

Looking at light for my photo mission today, and how its position can influence how we interpret the subject on a psychological level. First pic: light from above looks normal, as our minds are wired for light from the sun and sky as our main light source. 2nd pic: light from below is unusual and unfamiliar, creating dissonance and suggesting things are out of balance, in this case a light mysteriously emerging from the ground. 3rd pic:omnidirectional light, here there is no clear up or down, causing ambiguity and a surreal feel.
