Aurora - Wednesday, November 12, 2025

Just in case you missed the memo, there was a fairly decent Aurora last Wednesday night. I’m very slow to go from shot to posting these days, but here’s one of my favorites from night.

So much going on, Aurora in the South, SAR arc and STEVE with the setting Milky Way in the West. All combined in the resting place of the SS Speke. 😍

Byron Bay Whales (Part 1) 🐋

Not sure it’s worth the story, not many are seeing my posts lately (the price of being quiet on the socials I guess) - but here goes anyway!

Back in the September school holidays, the family took a trip to Byron Bay. I’ll admit, I had an ulterior motive… knowing it would coincide with the peak of the Humpback Whales southern migration.

Whale watching here at home can be a bit hit-and-miss, I’ve found over the years you need some luck on your side to catch active whales, so to give myself the best chance, I booked four trips. Great plan in theory… until the weather had other ideas!

Strong winds on day one saw my first trip rescheduled. Thankfully, day 2 went ahead as planned, with my eldest daughter along for the ride. She had only one request: “I want to see a Humpback Whale, not an Orca!”

Poor kid! This was her third whale watching tour in her life, and to date had only seen Orcas! 😂 (if only she knew how lucky she was!).

Thankfully her wish came true, and then some. Not only did we see Humpback Whales, but they were feeling particularly jumpy!

Here are a few shots from that first outing. My hit rate for “in focus” shots wasn’t the best, but had plenty of opportunities to practice! 😉

Thank you to wildbyronseasafaris for an amazing day out on the water.

Out with Wildlife Coast Cruises at the prom a couple of weeks ago.

11 whales were logged, plus we saw others in the distance as we were heading for home. We came across a calf with some interesting markings/scars on and around its dorsal fin. Numerous breaches in the distance which made photography tricky, plus some good old tail action.

The shearwaters had made their return and were plentiful.

All in all, a pretty good day out on the water!

Thanks Captain Andrew (Thommo), who is an amazing wealth of information on the local area providing some history I never knew about. Thanks for tolerating all my questions too! 😜

A Brief Aurora show on Saturday Night!

A few Aurora alerts throughout the day had sparked my interest. Typically as nightfall approached the graphs turned in the wrong direction confirmed by a lack of activity on my iPhone test shots from my back door.

At 9.45pm test shot revealed nothing, at 10pm I had colour! Rightio - time to find my gear and get out there. It took me around 15 minutes from leaving the house to takiing my first shot on location (I’m a little out of practice! 😜).

In those 15 minutes I probably missed a good portion of the show, but managed a few snaps before it all died back down again.

It’s been a little while between Aurora drinks, so I’ll take this one! 😉

Spending some time with the whales near Wilson’s Prom back on September 19.

We were lucky enough to come across a pod of 6 whales before the wind ruined the party after lunch making whale spotting difficult.

Captain and crew were amazing as always!

Thanks to Wildlife Coast Cruises for having me on board. 🐋

It’s been a minute!

I’ve been pretty quiet on the photography front lately. My poor camera has become well acquainted with the inside of its bag! 😂

Priorities shift, life gets in the way, blah blah blah… you know how it is!

On the Aurora front there hasn’t been much on offer for us here on the Victorian coastline since the big New Year Aurora, so last night with a hint of activity I thought I’d try my luck.

Sure, it wasn’t a massive display like the ones we’ve been spoilt with in the past year, but given it’s been a few months between drinks and it sparked my motivation, I’m calling it a win! 😍

⚡️ BOOM ⚡️

Don’t you just love a light show that goes on for hours!?

However, It was difficult navigating the rain tonight, and with lightning in all directions I decided to play it safe and spent most of the night tucked up nice and dry on my deck or set up in the back shed with the roller door a metre or so off the ground.

While it was a fantastic show to sit and watch, my photos aren’t all that exciting with neighbours rooflines and my backyard for a foreground.

Around 10.30pm, the rain eased and I decided to get in the car and try my luck at the San Remo Jetty. Constant drops of water on my lens still proved difficult… but managed a few worthy shots in a small window before the rain started up again.

A quick share tonight, it’s time for me to go to bed 😴

A few strikes from the thunderstorm that went though this afternoon.

This is a stack of two frames captured a minute or two apart. In order to capture these strikes I needed to get my shutter speed as low as possible, which meant closing down the aperture as far as it would go. When this happens every and I mean EVERY speck of sensor dust appears on the final image… boy, does my sensor need a clean! 😂😳

Anyway, these were my two favourite strikes, combined into one image so I only had to clean up one image…. I’m still seeing spots! 🤪

Enjoy! ⚡️
