The beauty of the blue waters in Tonga around the waters Vava’u’s archipelago. Swimming with whales here is always a highlight of my year. And it’s always a joy to work alongside one of Tongas most experienced whale guides, Allistair and our amazing caption Vili. Our team had gotten us some incredible encounters with these giants already this season. We always leave it up to the whales whether they want to interact with us, each swim is dictated by their behavior and our approach is always gentle. It’s amazing what patience and a slow approach will get you when working with wildlife. And we have been so rewarded recently.

I can tell you two things with great certainty: I’ve spent more time with whale sharks in the past 6 years than I have with my closest friends and family. Photographing these amazing animals has truly shaped my career as an ocean photographer. I owe them everything, and despite having swum with them countless times, each moment is always a treasure. So this I’m sharing a small selection of my favourite whale shark images from the Ningaloo Reef.

Meet Brooke Pyke (Brooke Pyke), an award-winning wildlife photographer based on Ningaloo Reef in Exmouth, Western Australia. A PADI Scuba Instructor whose photography journey began in a high school darkroom, Brooke’s early passion for film photography merged with her love of the ocean once she started diving professionally. She soon realized that the ocean was an incredible source of inspiration, and underwater photography “quickly became an obsession.”

Early in her career as a dive professional, working with the Marine Megafauna Foundation as a volunteer on manta research, Brooke captured an image of a manta ray feeding through plastic pollution. The photo made international news and won an award in conservation photography, a moment that led her to realize the power of photography within conservation, which in turn led her to pursue a path as a professional photographer.

In 2022, Brooke won an international photography award, but she says what matters most isn’t the accolades:

“What fills me with the most pride and fulfilment is the effect my work has on other people. I regularly receive messages from strangers telling me that my photography inspired them to try diving or snorkeling for the first time, or that they are now pursuing a career in marine science or ocean photography. Those messages mean more to me than any award.”

“Knowing that my imagery has moved someone, sparked a curiosity, or deepened a connection to the ocean, that is almost wholly why I do what I do.”

Living on the Ningaloo Reef means she gets to spend a lot of time documenting whale sharks in the area. One of her favorite whale shark images is now featured on a limited edition PADI Certification card, which feels like a truly full circle moment for Brooke. Still available as an eCard PADI !!

Why am I so rich?

Each month, day or year I look back on how I spent my time and judge the richness of my life based not on money, but on the wildlife I have been so fortunate to encounter. On the memories that will outlast everything. These moments, and the time we spend in wild places, have infinite value. Seeing wild animals thriving in their natural environment is something we should never take for granted.

There are things I’ve seen that I already can tell you are things that future generations will never get to encounter. The life we have experienced and the world we grew up in is changing.

The people who come after us will never get to know nature as we have. They may never see an orangutan roaming free in the jungle, may never see a marlin hunting a bait ball, may never listen the crackle of a healthy thriving reef. This is what we stand to lose, this is what we must protect.

When you photograph wildlife, you want to try to capture the moment, save it. You don’t just admire the wildlife, you want to protect it and see it through a different lens. When you stand on the plains at sunrise watching a tower of giraffes move through the golden light, something shifts in you.

On a trip to South Australia with FUJINON Lenses, I visited the largest open-range safari experience outside of Africa. Monarto is run by Zoos SA, a non-profit organisation whose entire mission is connecting people with nature and saving species from extinction. From breeding critically endangered rhinos to recovery programs for native species like the bilby and Tasmanian devil, the conservation work happening here is genuinely life-saving. And that’s exactly why experiences like this matter.

Last year I was very fortunate to have the honour of documenting the natural beauty and inhabitants of Ningaloo’s nursery, the Exmouth Gulf. Working alongside one of my favourite authors, Tim Winton, long-time pioneer of Protect Ningaloo, and Australian Geographic journalist Fleur Bainger. I set out over several days in hopes of capturing some scenes of this unique environment, giving it the justice it deserves.

The Gulf really is a place like no other, a home, resting place and nursery to so many threatened species. There is truly no way to accurately measure or photograph it in any way that can show just how special it is. And not only for the animals that rely on it, but also its deep cultural meaning to the people who came before us. There is history here which we are only just scratching the surface of. Many of the species we see frequently on the reef rely on this ecosystem, the two deeply rooted together.

Right now, this area is under threat of development. A deep water port is currently undergoing planning. This would mean the industrialisation of the Gulf, putting many animals and environments at risk. Dugongs, humpback whales, delicate seagrass meadows, sea sponges and soft corals would face the immense impacts of dredging, noise disturbance and the constant risk of collision with incoming ships.

Please help us protect Ningaloo and SAVE THE EXMOUTH GULF, so that generations to come can experience the same Ningaloo and Gulf that we have had the privilege to explore.

📷 What’s my recipe for successful shots? Here is a basic guide for my “go to” camera settings when shooting with ambient lighting underwater and on land.

First up I choose these settings:
- Shoot in RAW
- Set Manual Mode
- White balance ‘cloudy’
- Burst mode if shooting moving subjects
- Focus AF mode continuous
- Flexible focus point controlled manually

UNDERWATER TIPS:
- Stay shallow to maximize light and colour
- Get close to reduce water density (when safe and respectful)
- Shoot across and level with subject
- Shoot with sun on your back for better clarity
- Use 15mm fisheye or 15-35mm wide angle lenses

WILDLIFE TIPS:
- Use a shutter that’s at least double your focal length
- Prioritise higher shutter speeds for fast moving wildlife
- Open your aperture as wide as it goes
- Shoot around dawn/dusk for nice lighting
- Get level with your subjects (lay on the ground if needed!)
- Use a telephoto lens 100-500mm recommended

My go to equipment is:
Canon R5 Mii, Canon 10-15mm fisheye, Canon 14-35mm wide angle, Canon 100-500mm telephoto, Canon 600mm prime telephoto.
