We reckon the best free camps are often the ones you find yourselves.

No reviews. No photos. No expectations. Just pulling up somewhere that feels right and seeing what happens.

This was one of those nights.

We lit the fire and cooked steaks on our OZ Braai Travel Braai for the very first time. There's just something about cooking over a campfire that makes everything taste better. πŸ”₯πŸ₯©

Then, the next morning, we spotted two beautiful brolgas. Those unexpected wildlife encounters are the moments that stay with you long after you've moved on.

Sometimes the best memories don't come with a booking confirmation. β€οΈπŸšπŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί

What starts as a simple drive west quickly turns into another adventure we definitely weren't expecting... πŸ˜…

In this week's episode we're leaving Brisbane behind and discovering just how beautiful inland Queensland can be. From stunning scenery to amazing free and low-cost camps, it's proof that some of the best parts of Australia aren't on the tourist trail.

But Google Maps has other ideas. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

If you're planning a road trip, love caravanning, or just enjoy seeing what happens when plans don't quite go to plan, you'll want to watch this one until the end.

Today we officially completed the Gibb River Road! πŸŽ‰

After 24 days, countless corrugations, river crossings, dusty sunsets and unforgettable camps, we've driven the entire length of one of Australia's most iconic outback roads.

We definitely weren't in a rush! πŸ˜… We even spent six relaxing nights at Birdwood Downs Station at the end, giving ourselves a chance to unwind after such an incredible adventure.

Along the way we spent:

πŸ•οΈ 1 night overlooking the Cockburn Range
πŸ•οΈ 4 nights on the Pentecost River
πŸ•οΈ 1 night near the Durack River
πŸ•οΈ 3 nights at Ellenbrae Station
πŸ•οΈ 2 nights at Drysdale Station
πŸ•οΈ 2 nights at the Gibb River
πŸ•οΈ 2 nights at Mount Elizabeth Station
πŸ•οΈ 2 nights at Manning Campground
πŸ•οΈ 1 night at Galvans Gorge

In total, we enjoyed nine nights of free camping, and all of our paid camping - including Birdwood Downs - came to just under $700.

The Gibb River Road has been everything we'd hoped for and more. Incredible landscapes, crystal-clear gorges and rivers, welcoming stations, campfires under star-filled skies, and memories we'll be talking about for years. It challenged us at times, but that's part of what makes finishing it feel so rewarding.

It's hard to believe this chapter is already over. We've travelled some amazing roads over the past couple of months and the Gibb is definitely one we'll never forget.

Now... time to wash a whole lot of Kimberley dust off everything! πŸ˜‚

Have you driven the Gibb River Road? We'd love to hear what your favourite stop was! πŸ‘‡

πŸ“ Virgin Rock Free Camp (Springsure, QLD)

Some free camps are simply a place to pull up for the night... and then there are places like Virgin Rock.

Nestled among towering red rock formations, it's a beautiful spot to spend an evening - but the real magic happens after dark. As the floodlights illuminate the rock face, it completely transforms the landscape and creates a spectacular backdrop. It's definitely a camp that leaves an impression!

There's plenty of room to spread out, it's an easy stop if you're travelling through the area, and for a free camp, it's hard to beat the setting.

We love finding places that remind us you don't have to spend a fortune to have an unforgettable night on the road.

Life on the road isn't always sunsets, campfires and breathtaking views...

The last couple of months have been huge. We've tackled the Plenty Highway, the Tanami and the Gibb River Road - some of Australia's most iconic (and demanding) roads. They've been incredible, but... they've also left us completely exhausted.

I've been struggling for a few days now. Living with Crohn's means there are times when my body just doesn't want to co-operate, and being on the move all the time doesn't magically make those days disappear.

I think it's easy to look at travel photos and videos and assume every day is an adventure. The reality is, this lifestyle still comes with bad days, hard days, days where you're tired, overwhelmed, homesick, or just need a break.

The difference is... these hard days happen in some pretty amazing places.

For the next few days, we'll be doing very little. Yes, the Cruiser and caravan need a good clean, but we need to recharge and that's okay. One of the biggest lessons this lifestyle has taught us is that you don't have to be exploring every single day.

If you're travelling full-time too, we'd love to know... have you ever hit a point where you just needed to stop and breathe?

We decided to make a quick escape off the gravel yesterday! πŸ˜‚

With the WA school holidays in full swing, we passed so many vehicles heading east that we thought we'd quit while we were ahead and keep going to Birdwood Downs Station.

Not a bad decision really... because it just so happened to be burger night! πŸ” And they definitely didn't disappoint.

Tomorrow's agenda is pretty simple... give the Cruiser and caravan a much-needed clean (there's red dust in places we didn't even know existed πŸ˜…) and then do... well... not much at all.

After the past couple of months of driving, I think we're both ready for a day of absolutely nothing. 😊
