High-flyer

Here is my favourite image out of a 20 image sequence that was taken yesterday 3/6/26 of a large Humpback Whale breaching off Terrigal NSW .

This time of the year I am fortunate enough to spend quite a bit of time with Skipper Jones of Terrigal Ocean Tours photographing the Northern and Southern Humpback Whale migration.

If you are interested in Humpback Whales I post my images from each trip on the page, Whale Reports Central Coast.

The Bateau Bay Swifties

This is the last post 7 of 7 of the Bateau Bay Swift Parrots.
Instead of posting just one pic I thought I would post a collection of images that were taken over the last 2 weeks at Wyrrabalong NP Bateau Bay NSW .

Thank you Nick Carson for your help.

Conservation Status Critically Endangered

Lerps provide a valuable energy source during the Swift Parrots mainland migration.
This image is an example of how the Swift Parrots moves along the leaf with its tongue feeding on the tiny lerps .

The Lerp is a tiny sugary covering made by a juvenile stage of a sap-sucking insect called a psyllid on Eucalyptus leaves .

This image is a bit soft but I thought I would share it anyway as it is more about the context of the image.
I have never seen a Swift Parrots tongue before, I was fortunate enough to capture this image as the Swift Parrots came out in the open to clean its beak .

It is estimated that the wild population is between 500-750 birds .

Over the last 3 weeks the Critically Endangered Swift Parrots have been feeding on Lerps and Blackbutt (Euc. pilularis) blossoms in the Bateau Bay area in NSW .
These large Eucalyptus trees can grow to 40m in height .
The Swift Parrots have generally been feeding in the top of the canopy making photographing them quite challenging. But that’s what motivates me to get the pic , I love the challenge.

Over the next 7 days I am going to post one of my favourite images each day .
I hope you enjoy the pics of this Critically Endangered Species.
