When I shoot cricket, I usually position myself at one end of the wickets often on the south side somewhere between the 10 and 2 o’clock angle.
From here, depending on the over, I’m either watching the bowler come in or focusing on the batter and I’m also able to capture moments like the batter running to make their crease, without having to change angles or reposition. I’m set up and ready, rather than reacting late.
Cricket is mostly played during the middle of the day, often in harsh Australian sunlight. The light changes constantly, and it’s not an ideal time to shoot but in sport, you don’t get to choose the game times.
Learning how to work with those conditions, rather than waiting for perfect light, is a big part of sports photography at club level.
