*WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT* - The Hand Coloured Photographic Print with Kate Breakey.

Join USA-based internationally acclaimed photographic hand colourist, Kate Breakey in the beautiful Adelaide Hills to learn hand colouring techniques using your own photographs.

This is a 4-day workshop commencing on 11 December 2026 and there are just 8 spots still available.

Beginning in the 19th century the earliest photographs were often tinted with paint, to make them more ‘life-like’. After the advent of colour film in the 1950’s this was no longer necessary, so hand-colouring photographs became an interpretive, expressive art form, to making photographs more compelling and unique.

In this workshop, you will be introduced to some digital techniques using Lightroom and Photoshop and output images on a variety of papers. You will be instructed in the application of oil paints, pigments, pencils, and inks or pastels in combination, to extend your photographic image. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. Kate will inspire you to explore and experiment with a variety of materials and techniques and to find your own creative process.

Photography is a magical process, but the ‘hands on’ aspect of applying pigment is not only fun; it is a meditation on the joy of making something that comes from somewhere within.

This class is limited to a small group. Each day will consist of short slide shows, demonstrations, and supervised studio time with lots of individual one-on-one guidance. Macclesfield is in the Adelaide Hills only 15 mins from Mount Barker. Participants without a car can easily commute from Adelaide for morning pickups at the bus station in Mount Barker - or could make a holiday of it and stay at one of the B&Bs in the area. We are SO excited to host this workshop at Watermark Crossing and cannot wait!

It was such a honour to host a screening of ‘The Still Point’ about legendary photographer Robert McFarlane, and to have it opened by his brother Peter McFarlane. Director Mira Soulio and Cinematographer & photographer Hugh Freytag discussed the making of the film and subsequent events.

We were delighted to have a great crowd for this screening and apologise to those who were on the waiting list. It was amazing that so many people came up to the hills on a beautiful Autumn day for this gathering and conversation. Peter McFarlane gave a beautiful opening speech about his brother and it was amazing to have him and some of the McFarlane family at the screening to offer insights into Robert and his work.

Mira Soulio spoke so openly about her experience of working with Robert in the making of this film, and it was amazing to have her insights into Robert’s approach to his decades-long career as a freelance photographer and how he stored and managed his archive.

Hugh Freytag, who not only worked on the film as a cinematographer but who also processed many rolls of B&W film found after Robert’s death, shared a set of slides and talked about what he knew about some of the images, many of them colour images not shown in the film. Local camera and film processing store Photoco Camera House were integral to the supply of these slides but also critical in processing many rolls of colour film, as was another local photography store, Black and White Photographics. It’s amazing to see how the local photography community got together to process these never-before-seen images.

There was a lot of interest in our on-site darkroom and it was so great to meet photographers and enthusiasts who came out to support Mira and to honour Robert McFarlane’s legacy. Thanks very much to everyone involved!

Sunday 26th APRIL '26, 2pm - 4pm
THE STILL POINT : Robert McFarlane documentary film screening & presentation

Join us at Watermark Crossing for this special presentation, by the director, of this celebrated documentary about pioneering photographer Robert McFarlane.

Local photographer Hugh Freytag .m.freytag will be sharing his experiences of working with a posthumous discovery of some previously unknown and unprinted negatives from Robert’s collection.

This is an amazing opportunity to hear about director Mira Soulio’s experience of working with Robert to create this documentary, and to see some of his negatives and prints in person.

'Robert McFarlane initially made images from a simple impulse – to re-live experience. Following the situations and individuals McFarlane was drawn to photograph, we find a body of work where the subject holds sway and a photographer for whom life, as it unfolds in front of the lens, is more powerful than any orchestrated image – where reality confounds our expectations. Photography for McFarlane is not about photography, making images is about being in life'.

*followed by a special presentation and Q&A*
Meet the director of this home-grown documentary to find out more about how she approached working with Robert to create this intimate insight into his life and work, and about the bits that didn’t make it into the documentary, and what has been happening since the filming and screening.

Incredibly, since Robert’s death in 2023, a stash of his unseen negatives was discovered by his family. Adelaide-based photographer Hugh Freytag has since been working with these negatives to print some of the most poignant images. Hugh will talk about his experience of working with Robert’s negatives, and will bring some prints and negatives to showcase this previously unseen work. There are just 25 seats available for this intimate screening and conversation.

Thanks to our friends at for their support!

This was a collaboration between a LOCAL team based in the Adelaide Hills. With all that is going on in the world we wanted to explore staying close to home for work, whilst building a network of collaborators who can work together to create magic and have fun - a perfect distraction from tricky times! The studio is in Macclesfield (as is the photographer), the makeup artist is based in Strathalbyn, the hair stylist is in Mount Barker, the stylist is in Belair, and one of our models is also in Mount Barker.

So excited to continue to find opportunities to work with this awesome team! If you know any small businesses in the Adelaide Hills who need branding shoots, product shoots, portraits, fashion shoots, a unique location for shoots, or creative content - check out our amazing team and reach out to them. Also if you're an Adelaide Hills creative we'd love to connect..

Lindsay Rainey is a fashion photographer based in Adelaide, and he regularly shoots at our sister studio Cog Creative Space in Adelaide. So we invited him to try out Watermark Crossing for his next shoot – curious about how he would use the space.

Lindsay has developed a solid team around him, with stylist India Worthington, makeup artist Emma Penno and hair stylist Jade Veitch often providing creative input to the look and feel of Lindsay’s work. For this shoot he wanted to capture some of his team as the subjects, and it was so interesting so see how they worked both in front of and behind the camera.

Lindsay explored some colour gels and camera movement with India for a creative start to the shoot, and then did a series of portraits of Emma. He ended up using some of our pop-up Lastolite textured backdrops (which he was expertly able to collapse – thanks Lindsay!) and shot Emma and Jade at various spots around the studio for more environmental shots. It was such a treat to watch this creative team in action!

* Importing images from a memory card (and / or existing folder etc)
* Tethering
* Keywording
* Comparing & selecting images (Library Filter etc)
* Shortcuts

* Exporting images
* & lots more!!

Your tutor has over 30 years' experience as a professional photographer, and has been teaching this workshop since the early days of Lightroom. This is a small-group workshop (5 people max) so you will get plenty of personal attention.
