Several thousand stood in the centre of Boorloo this morning, their voices loud and their message clear,

End forest mining.

Western Australian’s from Perth, Margaret River and Albany joined tens of thousands across the country calling for an end to native deforestation as part of the Bob Brown Foundation’s March For Forest.

Despite WA ending native logging in 2024 – the first State to do so at the time – thousands of hectares of Northern Jarrah Forest are still reduced to mulch every year.

An ecosystem found nowhere else on Earth, home to critically endangered cockatoos, quokkas orchids and more, levelled for Bauxite – the raw component of Earth’s most common metal, Aluminium.

In their 60 years of mining in WA, Alcoa has cleared more than 28,000 hectares of forest, none of which has been successfully rehabilitated.
During this clearing, Alcoa has broken the law several times by destroying crucial habitat trees for black cockatoos.

Alcoa’s expansion has also been stated by WA’s own State Regulator, Water Corporation, it proves a “significant risk” to poisoning one of Perth main water supplies.

While Alcoa has recent been slapped with a $55 million fine for some of its illegal clearing, the multi-billion dollar company has also been handed an exemption to continue mining for the next 18-months for the “national interest” by the Federal Government.

The US-company plans to clear a further 11,000ha and keep their mining operations running until 2045.

Speaking at the protest Green’s MLC Jess Beckerling said it was WA’s “great shame” to continue clearing forests when fewer than 10 per cent of the State original vegetation still stands.

She said WA cannot rely on the State or Federal Government to enforce the law to control Alcoa.

She said the next time Alcoa are found to have broken the law, news of another exemption won’t be far behind and people should be angry.

“What we are seeing is an absolute disgrace,” she said.

“Right now, it might seem impossible that we are going to stop Alcoa, but I tell you we are.”

Collapse – The Tawny Frog Mouth.

This is the image people often look at and ask "What is it?"

And I don't blame them, it's a confusing mishmash of feathers and beak, with spotted wings draped over a log.

The tawny frog mouth is a stand out amongst Australian birds, often fading into the branches it is perching upon.

I view these birds almost synonymously with the forest, hence the title - Collapse.

Both for the forests and the birds.

A couple more pictures from the raptor rescue last week.

A Tawny Frogmouth, Boobook owl and Wedgetail Eagle what's not to love!

Sadly this is the last of the the photos I got whilst there so no more beautiful birds until I get lucky enough to see any in the wild!

Here's the story I wrote about them: https://shorturl.at/Uq7VK

Over the last couple of weeks I've been out looking at wildflowers along Wildflower Ridge Walk in Harvey.

It's a lovely spot and the diversity of flowers is really something else.

Nice to just get out into the country to appreciate the diversity of nature right at my feet.

Another bird from the raptor rescue.

A gorgeous wedgetail eagle.

By far my favourite bird that isn't a penguin.

Lots more lovely birds to show in the coming days!

Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Geraldton for work.

Whilst there I was able to visit a raptor rescue to talk about the impact rat poisons are having on our native wildlife.

They're called Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides. They take a while to kill rats and mice, and don't break down quickly. So a poisoned rodent can quite quickly poison a bird of prey feasting on them.

It's likely the biggest threat to our native owls out there and has even been detected in other animals like possums.

When at the rescue it wasn't just doom and gloom, as I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph a range of birds.

But these three owls and a frogmouth all died from SGARs.

If you are looking to get rid of some rodents, please just look for poisons that aren't SGARs.

The owls will thank you!

Illuminate - The Dugite

This was the second photo I did for The Lost. Taking on the styles of Vanitas and traditional still life long before I decided darkness and mirrors were the coolest ways to go!

When I started this project I wanted to create images that future generations could massively overanalyse to find as much subtext as possible since I was going into such great depth of other photographers at the time.

Let's just say, the apple, candle and even the rabbit pelt behind all have their own special meaning!

Two weeks ago I ran a birds and nature photography workshop.

In typical fashion, the very first thing I saw was by far the most surprising!

Check out this cool little raven thief enjoying a morning snack. It's not every day you see a raven stealing an egg.

Tuesday Newsday!

This was a welcome treat on Friday night.

We had a Southern Right Whale and her calf passing by Preston Beach, which was a wonderful way to end the week.

I took out my drone and flew it out to get some photos. Sadly the camera quality isn't the best on the drone, but it was phenomenal to see them.

Misc. Monday!

A few landscapes from around the Harvey Region.

I've been making the effort to pull the car over when I see something particularly pretty these last few weeks.

And with a very difficult week last week, I took some extra time just to soak in the landscape when driving across the region.

Harvey's a unique place because the dam, the farmland and the pine forests aren't natural landscapes by any means, but they are still vast and empty enough to be picturesque.

Overdone - The Quenda

It's not a rat!

It's a quenda, also known as a bandicoot.

Fabulous little animals vital to an ecosystems health.

Quenda's were some of the first animals I photographed as roadkill. Rockingham's Kulija Road is a particularly big hotspot for these poor little animals.
