Was so stoked to see a pair of Birthday Bristlebirds yesterday - they were very confiding and approachable - these skulkers are usually quite difficult to photograph, so very happy with them 🕊️

The deadly H5N1 bird flu has arrived in Australia with the potential to greatly disrupt ecosystems and push our most threatened species even closer to extinction.

Australia is the last continent to grapple with this disease, and the Federal Government is coordinating the national response.

Now is the time to publicly share plans, increase surveillance and coordination, and step up federal investment to lessen the impact on Australia’s most at-risk species and ecosystems.

In this interactive webinar, experts will unpack the impacts of bird flu globally and the risk to Australia’s unique birds, mammals and ecosystems. They then will identify urgent actions needed today to improve Australia's response – including deeply engaging Traditional Knowledge Holder Elders in decision making.

The webinar will include a half-hour Q&A session.

One of Australia’s cutest looking birds, the Owlet Nightjar, grabbing some sunshine from its hollow - it is our smallest of our nocturnal birds - as BirdLife Australia says “they might look like a cross between the two, Australian Owlet-nightjars are neither an owl, nor a nightjar.
Instead, they’re a distinct species, belonging to a small family of nocturnal birds found only in Australasia called the owlet-nightjars. Sometimes called moth or fairy owls, they’re usually considered more closely related to nightjars – although this relationship is obscure and disputed. The Australian Owlet-Nightjar is the only species of owlet-nightjar found in Australia.” Thanks to Victoria Wink for pointing out this bird to me and I dedicate this post to Lanita Castaña - happy birdday ! 💙🦉🌚🫙

Headed to Plenty Gorge to try and find the visiting Rose Robin, bumped into Victoria Wink a lovely expert birder with excellent local knowledge - we got onto the bird (thanks Victoria!) and he was very happy perch hunting and zipping back and forth in the mid morning sun with his rosey red jumper on. 🌹🕊️🌹
