Two weeks and I'll get to photograph the Pilbara Trailblazers Red Dirt Backyard Ultra again, so it felt like the right time to look back at last year’s event.
When I was first asked to photograph an ultra-marathon, I expected grit, dust, sore legs and a lot of determination. What I didn’t expect was just how many genuine happy faces I’d see throughout the day.
There’s something pretty special about this event. Runners pushing themselves, volunteers keeping everything moving, people cheering each other on, and this strange mix of exhaustion and joy that somehow makes perfect sense when you’re there.
