In the Cook Islands, there are several dialects which includes reo Rarotonga, as we know, is the official Cook Islands Māori dialect of the nation - also known as Te reo 'Ipukarea. We also have reo Mangaia, reo Aitutaki, reo o Te Fu'inga ō Nīva (Manihiki/Rakahanga dialect) - which is my dominant Cook Islands Māori reo and that of my family, reo Tongareva, reo Pāmati and the unique and majestic language of the people of Te Nuku-ō-Ngālewu - Pukapuka e Nassau - which as we know, is a language of its own.

I use the term 'tātakita'i', but at times, you will find me using the term 'takanava' - in reference to the word 'dialect' or 'dialects', which is used alot by Te Kopapa Māori (The Cook Islands Language Māori Commission).

Fun fact: the Cook Islands Māori language (including its various dialects and the Pukapuka/Nassau language) became an official language of the Cook Islands only 21 years ago. It was enacted by the Government of the Cook Islands in 2003 and came into force under Te Reo Māori Act 2003 on 1st July that year. Yet, it's almost 60 years since the Cook Islands have been a self-governing nation. Up until 2003, the English language was the only official language of the Cook Islands.

TŌKU TUPURANGA - MY HERITAGE ♡

Ever wonder sometimes how.. if your parents didn't do certain things that led to them meeting before you were born.. if they didn't do any particular thing (in my case, my dad paddled on a 6-man canoe from Raiatea to Rarotonga and it was there he met my mother).. if they didn't do certain things, you wouldn't be here today? Just me? lol

Seriously, if my dad had just decided, "nope I'm not doing this, it's crazy" I don't even know if he would have had another chance of meeting my mum and having me but luckily, my warrior of a dad from Mā'ohi Nui did that, it was to be and here I am today 😆

After discovering videos from 1992, I've been so emotional just watching it.. even for the good 8 seconds or so it showed on the archives documentary I found it from, I spotted my dad and his golden locks right away - the faahoro of their vaka (seat 1), I cried. It was the year 1992, Te Rauroa o Hiva was the name of their 6-man vaka that journeyed to Rarotonga for the Vaka pageant at the 1992 Pacific Arts Festival held in Rarotonga. They recreated the journey of Tangiia from Raiatea to Rarotonga .. stopping at Mauke Island and finally arriving at their final destination in Avana. Dad told me that they trained for almost 2 years for this voyage and it was uncle Pito Clément's (Leader of their journey/5th paddler) crazy idea they do this. Dad also shared to me that this was the most powerful thing he has ever experienced.. I quote him "E MANA te Moana". They were at sea for almost 10 days on that tiny little vaka. I use to ask him questions about toilet breaks, kaikai breaks, getting up and stretching.. how? His reply is always "Only the tumutoa Mā'ohi can do like that" 😆.. All six of them were also blessed with ocean names prior to Te Rauroa o Hiva's journey to Rarotonga at Raiatea. Dad was bestowed with the name Huia o te Moana.

A story I loved hearing and now keep reminiscing and will one day tell my kids all about for sure but for now.. I will brag about as much.. while I patiently wait here in Australia hoping I will be able to travel to my fenua ai'a very very soon and be with him 😞
