Wheelchair Basketball Australia finals - Women's 3v4 Perth Wheelcats v Sydney Uni Lions Wheelchair Basketball Club

What a way to kick off the finals. Third place Perth Wheelcats came in strong and looked likely to be the ones moving through to the Saturday Preliminary final. In the third, the Wheelcats got to margin out to a maximum of 12 points.

But the Lions would not go down without a fight, clawing back the entire deficit in the fourth to upset Perth and take the match 55-57, led from the front by captain/coach Hannah Dodd PLY who topped for rebounds and assists and was third on court for points.

The Wheelcats will lick their wounds and look to regroup in the bronze medal match against the loser of the preliminary final. Their hopes for a grand final berth might be over but their finals campaign continues.

What we do on the sidelines...

Belt Up Perth Wheelcats and vicwondersmarvels both played hard on court. And on the sidelines they showed their community, their personality and the balance between elite athleticism and life off the court.

Ebony Stevenson made sure the Wheelcats were rehydrated post game thanks to her player sponsor Lactalis.

Players were acknowledged for their team spirit with prizes (I'm sure one of the women will comment to explain mini hulk 🤣)

There were laughs, autographs, birthdays celebrated and young family members hugged.

And during the match, coaches worked hard, players were focussed and if they weren't on court, they were double duty as cheer squad.

There's just one more round of Wheelchair Basketball Australia left. The Wheelcats are home to the Gold Coast Rollers starting tomorrow night.

See you there

One final Wheelchair Basketball Australia match to decide superiority between Belt Up Perth Wheelcats and vicwondersmarvels after each side had managed to win a 5x5 game across the weekend.

It was another tight contest, with a Sunday morning crowd willing on the home team. Like the previous games, it was highly defensive - neither team had made it into double digits by the end of the 1st period.

However, it was the Victoria Wonders who managed to build a comfortable lead slowly throughout the game, resulting in a 39-48 victory to the visitors.

The three games have been a taste of the excitement of finals and I, for one, cannot wait to see these two teams face off again. But first, the Cats have to get past the Gold Coast Rollers this weekend at Bendat.

The second 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball Australia match between Belt Up Perth Wheelcats and vicwondersmarvels was as fierce as the first. Both teams were aggressive in defence, with the low-point players not allowing the high pointers any room to maneuver or get the shot off.

In the end it was the height and mobility of the Wonders that allowed them better opportunity at the hoop, taking the game 4-8

What a finish!

When I said the vibes were high in Wheelchair Basketball Australia Belt Up Perth Wheelcats v vicwondersmarvels the other weekend, I really meant it. The home crowd was passionate and LOUD. The women matched it on court with fire, fighting hard for every ball, pass and shot.

After such a close game 1, the Wheelcats knew they had a good chance of taking the game from 2nd on the ladder Wonders. But the Wonders weren't going to make that easy. It was a highly defensive match and a very low scoring affair.

Again, it came down to the final moments - Amber Merritt sinking 3/3 free throws after a Leanne Del Toso foul to tie the scores with 19 seconds remaining. The Cats scored again through an Ebony Stevenson lay-up with less than 2 seconds to go before Amber Merritt sealed the win with another free throw for the Perth Wheelcats to win 37-34!

If you've been paying attention to the Commonwealth Games (if you haven't - why not?) you'd have witnessed The Wombats, our incredible 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball teams, win gold in men's and bronze in women's just yesterday morning.

So now you're familiar with this fast paced, action-packed version of Wheelchair Basketball, you'll understand why I love photographing Wheelchair Basketball Australia 3x3 competition.

Belt Up Perth Wheelcats took on vicwondersmarvels in 3x3 the other weekend and it was a hard fought, defensive match - with both sides having to work hard to score. In the end, the experience and height of the Wonders prevailed 3-5.

It's been a while, but whilst we bask in Commonwealth glory, here's some snaps from the last round of Wheelchair Basketball Australia - Belt Up Perth Wheelcats at home against vicwondersmarvels

The vibes were high - I haven't heard a home crowd so passionate and loud (particularly belting out Sweet Caroline in the final quarter break) - as both teams toughed it out in a high intensity match. Finals are on the line so every win matters when trying to secure a coveted top 4 spot.

The Wheelcats rebounded strongly after a tough weekend the previous round and pushed the 2nd on the ladder Wonders all the way to the final buzzer, falling just short 51-53.

I'm still recovering from being named Runner Up in the Amateur category of the last night. Thank you everyone for your well wishes, kind comments and also voting for me in People's Choice. I appreciate the support.

It's been nearly twelve months since I captured Ebony Stevenson in a classic Ebony moment. I cannot believe how far this photo has gone - from winning the inaugural Leederville Camera House SportWest WA Sport Award for WA Sport image of the year, to last night.

I fear I may have peaked very early in my career (is it a career yet?) - I have no idea how I will ever top this image. It's a high bar to clear but I relish the challenge.

And before I go - all the best to Ebony and her Wombats teammates as they prepare to fly out to Glasgow. One day I hope to be with you to capture you killing it on the world stage. 💚💛💚💛💚

Sideline snaps 📸

Basketball is more than just action - there's the quiet moments of the time outs, breaks and pre-match: the manager hurriedly getting water and snacks to the team, the coach providing insight and the team getting around one another.

This season of men's Wheelchair Basketball Australia NWBL home game for Belt Up Perth Wheelcats has flown by. All the best for the rest of the season and I hope you make the finals!

The last Wheelchair Basketball Australia NWBL match between Manly and Belt Up Perth Wheelcats on Sunday saw a lot of physicality, with a number of players falling in the contest; no one holding back at the Wheelcats tried to take a game from the dominant Wheel Eagles.

Despite a strong effort from the Wheelcats, the Wheel Eagles secured their third win 50-73 sweeping the weekend and sending out a signal to the entire league that they mean business this season.
