My favourite shot of at my last studio workshop 😍

In this set up I was showing how the position of lights can create shadows 💁🏼‍♀️

When I was in grade 12 one of my teachers asked me what I wanted to do with my life - I said “I think I would like to be a teacher like you!” … he said “No” 😂 The suggestion instead, was that I live my life and find my passions and experience things and then if I still want to teach it will be something I love.

Today I spent 3 hours with photographers and creatives, exploring studio lighting, worked with strobes and continuous lights, photographed three incredible models, styled products, created content, and most importantly… shared my experience that studios aren’t nearly as scary as we sometimes make them out to be.

Thank you to everyone who came along, asked questions, shared their knowledge, and made the day such a supportive and fun experience. I genuinely LOVE running these workshops.

A huge thank you as well to our amazing models and collaborators:

Rain shoot… like literally in the rain, with 😂💦

Fun fact; most professional cameras are water resistant, but not waterproof! This means we can shoot in the rain! I’ve done photoshoots in cyclones and supercell thunderstorms (don’t try this at home 😅)

The PICTURE THIS lighting chronicles, a saga in five parts.

If you've ever stood in a studio wondering if this is your villain origin story, this is for you.

Tag a photographer who has lived at least three of these. 👇

Photographer mode activated: “Oh my gosh you look amazing. That colour is everything. What’s your first pose? Yes. YES. That looks so good.”

Drives home in complete silence 😅

But that mode, the ability to read someone the moment they step in front of your camera and immediately make them feel like the most exciting subject in the room, that is a skill.

And most photographers don’t realise how much it matters.

We spend so long obsessing over settings and exposure and getting everything technically right.

And yes, that stuff matters. But a perfectly exposed photo with an awkward, unconfident subject is still a bad photo.

The photographers who stand out aren’t just technically solid.

They know how to communicate. How to create confidence in the people they’re photographing. How to read energy and respond to it in real time.

That’s what actually changes photos.

And it’s a big part of what we focus on at Studio Confidence Day, less obsessing over perfection, more building the real-time confidence to direct people the moment they walk into the space.

Do you think directing is a skill that can be taught, or is it something you either have or you don’t? 👇

People usually only see the final photos.

They don’t see:
arriving early,
testing light,
moving furniture,
fixing costumes,
calming nervous dancers,
changing music,
demonstrating movement,
or carrying 47 bags into a studio while trying not to sweat 😂

This is what a normal shoot day actually looks like for me after 18 years of photographing dancers on the Sunshine Coast 🤍

Honestly one of the reasons we created Studio Confidence Day was because photographers rarely get to SEE what actually happens behind the scenes of real shoots.

The problem-solving.
The energy shifts.
The direction.
The communication.
The tiny adjustments that completely change a photo.

That stuff matters SO much.

And it’s the part most photographers are trying to figure out alone.
