VR J class J525 on the Carpolac line with a down goods train at Arapiles. Mitre Rock is visible in the background. Date likely around May - June 1968 given the presence of an early June 1968 tour in SA in the same slide box.

This is the last post with this goods train. To see the train earlier in its journey, search on my profile for “J525” or “Carpolac”.

Scanned from the late Geoff Burgoyne collection.

The stored Journey Beyond Rail Overland sleepers and Ghan/Indian Pacific sitting cars at Adelaide Parklands Terminal have been a particular point of interest for me for a while, so while I was at Keswick I went to photograph all the visible ones to get coverage and note down what was there.

The cars there include Overland sleepers last used around 2006 (when the service transitioned to a fully daytime service) and former South Australian Railways D-type cars reclassed as the AG and BG sitting cars, which were stored when economy class on the Indian Pacific and Ghan was cut around 2016. Given these changes, the cars have been surplus to their operations and have remained stored for years.

These cars may not fit in with JBR’s current operations, but do you think that they could still be used elsewhere?

Pacific National NR class NR56 long end leading with its bell ringing as it brings the second half of the Indian Pacific consist into Adelaide Parklands Terminal, South Australia. Did you know that some Australian diesel locomotives have bells installed for use in yards and stations?

Lachlan Valley Railway (LVR) is undertaking another Vintage Rail Journeys (VRJ) carriage movement between NSW and SA, with the transfer 2SA8 arriving in Adelaide today with New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) 49 class loco 4906 and 47 class 4702 leading DF class dining car DF 294 and NAM class sleeping car NAM 2374. The DF car is a Commonwealth Railways stainless steel car while the NAM car is a Southern Aurora car. After having missed the transfer earlier this year, I was quite pleased to photograph this one.

Photos taken at Dry Creek, 7 September 2026.

With Pacific National (PN) commencing the scrapping of the remaining Australian National (AN) DL class diesel locomotives at Werris Creek, NSW today (starting with DL47), it’s not looking very good for the DLs. It’s very possible that the whole class will be scrapped, with no public plans for any of the DLs to go to other organisations who may want to use or preserve one.

Given the significance of the occasion, I thought I’d mark it and try have a look for DLs in the portion of the late Geoff Burgoyne’s collection that I have, and coincidentally found photos of the exact locomotive that was scrapped today, DL47. With the impending disappearance of the class, photo and video records by rail enthusiasts will be very important in remembering this part of Aussie rail history.

Did you ever get to see or photograph a DL? While I never saw one myself, I’m quite happy to share these Geoff Burgoyne photos to remember them.
