A New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) U Set EMU train at Sydney Central railway station, photo processed September 1962. Wouldn’t it be nice to see the U boats working again?

Commonwealth Railways GM class diesel locomotive GM10 entered service on this day 74 years ago, 3 June 1952! It is still working with Southern Shorthaul Railroad, making it the oldest diesel-electric locomotive in regular freight service in Australia. These days, it is usually used on lighter duties, such as the AK Cars train used to inspect the ARTC national rail network.

Photo below taken at Coombe, 23 April 2023.

The first day of the ARHS Sayonara Mikado tour was on this day 58 years ago, 1 June 1968, so here’s slide photos of SAR 700 hauling the train on that day. I’ve identified 2/3 of the locations as Adelaide railway station and the River Torrens bridge, but I’m not sure where exactly the last location is.

This weekend of runs paid farewell to the Webb 1920s era Mikado locomotives, with South Australian Railways (SAR) 700 class leader no.700 doing the honours. The first day of the tour saw the locomotive haul passengers to Angaston in the Barossa Valley.

SteamRanger’s RailFest steam-hauled shuttles from last week, 24 May 2026!
These trains ran between Mt Barker and Bugle Ranges with SteamRanger’s 3 operational steam locomotives, SAR Rx class locos Rx224, Rx207 and SAR 620 class 621.

This year saw good passenger numbers on the shuttles, with another carriage added and a 3:30 shuttle added to the bookings.

Ararat railway station yard is busy with Victorian Railways (VR) locomotives T class T385, and J class steam locos J543 and J526 shunting goods wagons. Out of this lineup, only T385 is still around today. The day of this post also marks 59 years since the withdrawal of J543 on 30 May 1967.

Photos processed December 1966, Scanned from the Gordon Oates collection.
