Fire+RescueNSW is keeping me busy, It is only March and already this year I have had jobs at Chester Hill, then off to Warragamba, then to Chester Hill for Stage 2 ( Ground floor works), then to Wagga and Tumut, waiting for sign off on Warragamba, feedback on Chester Hill S2 and Wagga. Tumut is being documented now and out for comment early this coming week. After that work for Willoughby and Glebe need to be looked at.

This year marks ten years of doing work for Fire+RescueNSW. It is amazing to think that there are 335 stations across the state and I have done work in atleast 45 of them.

2025 was a big year for me with in excess of 12 jobs for Fire+RescueNSW, with proposed upgrade works at stations in the Sydney region and in regional centres. At least four of these projects to proceed to provide better facilities for fire fighters.

Fire+Rescue NSW has certainly been keeping me busy, documenting upgrade projects since November last year that include Avalon, Glebe, Botany, Berowra, Balgownie, Ashfield, Camden, Crows Nest, Marrickville, Newtown, Balmain and Alexandria. Now the regional work begins, going to Bourke the week before last, last week off to Temora, the next project is in Narromine, out past Dubbo!! All different types of station upgrades, to better accommodate staff with better facilities, especially with more female firefighters entering the service. NSW is looking to add 400 more firefighters to its ranks, these works vital. This is certainly different to the work that I have done in the past, everything from Residential Alterations and Additions DAs, Aged Care, Bank Fitouts, Hotels, Convenience Food stores (petrol stations changing into Gas & Groceries, ie Quikstop), NSW Properties and the Dept of Education and some commercial works, as well as working as a Quantity Surveyor and Project Manager along the way. I forgot to add the contractor work for Optus, Telstra, Transdev and others, that going back thirty years. I could not ask for a more varied career path if I tried, but it has been and is still fun, every week different!! Enjoy what you do!!

One of my FRNSW projects

Part of my work over the past couple of years has been for Fire+Rescue NSW, for upgrades to Fire Stations, with different types of projects, be it upgrades to station facilites or other types of projects that are bit left-field. A number of years ago I was approached with a project for a modular building. As you would know, fire fighters from time to time also use breathing apparatus in difficult situations. Some stations have suitable facilities to service and maintain this equipment where as some stations do not and have to make do with what they have. This modular building project was to provide a suitably fitted out structure that could be deployed to stations lacking suitable facilities, this a short-term measure until such time as Capital Works would upgrade a station and provide this. These buildings have water and power and suitably kitted out space inside to service this equipment, deployed off a tilt tray vehicle or craned into place, An interesting project where 20-30 of these would be deployed across the state. I know of one that has been put in place and no doubt there are others. See some images of this project. There are more to come.

One of the projects that I have worked on, a privilege to see heritage trades being undertaken. I spent two years on this project, taking hundreds of photographs to document the progress, for Property NSW. The site sat idle for two years after the fire, with little or no protection to the damaged building, 60% of it damaged by the fire, due supposedly to an electrical fault, in the ceiling to the ground floor and travelling up to the first floor and spreading throughout the building, in the accommodation wing and also the chapel. A great deal of brickwork had to be pulled down and relaid, as well as a new roof frame, new slate, timber windows, stained glass to the chapel and sandstone masonry works. An amazing project. My photographs document the work done to return this building to its former glory.

The Australian government is seeking to have Parramatta Female Factory added to the World Heritage List, where it would join just four Australian sites listed for their cultural significance.
