Every marketing person is telling you “don’t post your work, only post you working.” That’s not quite right either.
But posting only your work isn’t the answer.
Think about famous artists. You never saw their process, their studio, their behind-the-scenes. You saw the paintings. And now people pay millions just to know the story behind them.
It’s balance. Here’s how to actually split it:
1. Post your work to get hired. Show the finished product, the results, the transformation — this is what makes people trust you can do the job.
2. Post your story to get remembered. Show why you started, what you believe, how you think — this is what makes people choose you over someone else who does the same thing.
3. Alternate intentionally, don’t mix every post. One post, one purpose. A “work” post sells your skill. A “story” post sells your relatability. Trying to do both in one post usually does neither well.
4. Let your story explain your work. Once people know your why, your work means more to them. That’s when they stop scrolling and start following.
5. Track which one gets engagement vs which gets inquiries. Story posts usually build community. Work posts usually convert. You need both numbers moving.
Fun fact: brands that share founder stories alongside their portfolio see noticeably higher engagement than accounts that only post finished work — because people connect with people before they connect with a product.
