Earlier this year I participated in the 2025 Incognito Art Show, entering these three shell studies 🐚

The Incognito Art Show runs each year, all artworks are submitted completely anonymously and stay anonymous until after they’re sold. Then all funds raised from the art sales go directly to programs that support artists working with disability.

I just discovered my works have now all sold, so I thought I’d share them here. Thank you to the stranger/s who bought them, and helped support such an outstanding non-for-profit, the arts, and artists working with disability! Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities - visible and invisible! 🀍

medium: graphite, acrylic, & watercolour on paper.

πŸœƒ part six πŸœƒ

on return to my studio several days later, the stone wrapped in sassafras leaves is brought to my mortar and pestle. ground down to the finest of powders, refined, and refined again. till what is transmuted is a pigment, smooth and silky to the touch.

this pigment holds together in soft clusters with similar characteristics to italian terre verte, raw umber, and the many ochres from this land.

the pigment is then combined with oil, and mulled until a soft, even consistency is formed. each tiny grain of pigment, rolled under the muller, coated and bound in oil to form a paint; ready to take on a new form, on canvas.

πŸœƒ part three πŸœƒ
studding the depth like emeralds heavy with water, lay porous bodies of stone. blinking up through the moving surface. deep hues of phthalo green, tinted ever so slightly blue, a scattering of light from the sky.

this green is the colour of sassafras leaves as light shifts over them on a clear day, it is the colour of their upturned underbellies shivering in the sharp cold arrival of equinox winds.

each tone in someway a reflection of the towering trees above. each, inseparable from the other. roots that bore their way deep into the dark earth, passing through that same green stone, below the rivers laughing body.

as above, so below.

πŸœƒ part two πŸœƒ
bare feet on stones that hold the warmth of the morning sun, i walk to the rivers edge.

her surface is strewn with the pearl white petals of leatherwood flowers. stars borne through the cosmos, taken away by her flow.

we meet for the first time, as i listen to her murmuring stories. to her laughter, as down stream she darts and plunges between fallen sassafras limbs, that tell of the flooding rains of last winter. my gaze wanders across to the far bank, where she is still beneath heavy foliage. trout rise to the surface intermittently, scarcely creating a ripple. then down to the water below the place I now sit, and my breathe catches in wonder.
