My big kid's birthday snuck up on me recently and I realised (yet again) how fast life happens. It was equal parts lovely and slightly alarming.

It made me think about how much I want to hold onto this point in time. My small one will happily snuggle up on my lap and the big kid will too, though I'm not sure how long that will last.

I recently did a photoshoot with Sydney artist Em Hatton. Her paintings feature femme figures unapologetically resting, riding and raging and generally having a really good time. She paints a world where females have agency and power to look however they want and do whatever they feel like doing no matter who is looking. A quick note on preparing your kids for a photoshoot from someone who does this a lot.

You don’t need to hype it up, bribe them, or make it a big deal. Just let them know I’m coming to take some photos, and they don’t have to pose or smile if they don’t feel like it.

When I arrive, I’ll spend time actually getting to know them - asking them to show me around, tell me what they’re into, what their favourite spot in the house is. Before long they’ve completely forgotten why I’m there and they’re just doing their thing. You’ll end up with photos that will remind you of how this time in your life really felt and your future self will thank you.

The small rituals of motherhood are endlessly fascinating and beautiful to me. I breastfed my babies up to age 3 and I still miss those still, quiet moments together.

It feels like it’s been a long time coming, but there was definitely a chill in the air this morning. If you’ve been thinking about booking a photoshoot, this is a lovely time of year to do it. The crisp clear light in Autumn is wonderful for glowy sunsets that aren’t too late in the day. Summer holidays in black and white. These are a few highlights from our trip up the coast to our favourite beach town. We spent our days together in saltwater, sand and sun, hunting for crabs in the dunes, floating down the creek, eating bacon and egg rolls, painting watercolour pictures of the ocean, and seeking out new adventures.

I feel so grateful to live in this free and beautiful land.
