Into the Light – Karangahake Gorge, New Zealand

There's something timeless about walking through the old railway tunnels of Karangahake Gorge. The darkness, the damp stone walls, and the distant glow at the end create a scene that feels suspended between history and adventure.

This image captures a simple moment—two figures moving forward through the tunnel—yet it speaks to something much larger. The contrast between shadow and light draws the eye down the tunnel, creating a sense of mystery, journey, and possibility. The slight motion blur adds life and movement, reminding us that every path forward is a story still being written.

Captured with a Canon EOS R5 paired with a Tamron 18-400mm lens, the black-and-white treatment enhances the texture of the tunnel walls and the dramatic interplay of light, stripping away distractions and allowing the atmosphere to take centre stage.

Karangahake Gorge is one of New Zealand's hidden treasures, where nature and history intertwine. Once a bustling gold-mining region, its tunnels now invite visitors to step back in time and experience a unique piece of the country's heritage.

Sometimes the most powerful photographs aren't about what you see in the light—they're about what you discover while moving through the darkness.

If you ever need to get away from the world, this is the place to do it. Stunning views across the Pioneer valley back towards Mackay and out to the Great Barrier Reef.

At Discovery Parks last week and had the greatest opportunity of walking through the Lava tubes with water in them. Only up to our waist but what an experience. The Archway, picture below is a show piece.

Sunrises, tiny moments in nature, birds in flight, hidden textures and the wildlife that often goes unnoticed — this is the side of the world I love capturing through the lens.

These images are a reminder that some of the most incredible stories are found in the details around us every single day. From the early morning light breaking over the landscape, to the delicate spider webs, native birdlife and reptiles blending into their environment, nature never stops creating art.

Photography for me is more than taking pictures. It’s about storytelling, conservation, tourism, and helping showcase the beauty of our regions in a way that connects people to the environment.

I’m currently looking to work alongside tourism operators, eco-tourism businesses, wildlife organisations, conservation groups and regional brands who want authentic Australian imagery and visual storytelling for promotions, campaigns, social media or publications.

If your business wants professional, natural and engaging content, feel free to reach out.

Thanks to Rose Gums Wilderness Retreat for an awesome place to sit back and relax. Truly great accomodation at your Cockatoo Treeshouse.

This afternoon’s walk along the Kommo Toera Trail turned into something pretty special. I took the camera along and spent a bit of time capturing the little details you’d normally walk straight past—light through the trees, textures in the bark, and the quiet stillness that settles in late in the day. It’s a fascinating track, full of character and small surprises if you slow down enough to notice them. Good to switch off for a bit and just take it all in. Days like this remind you how much there is to see when you make the time.

Quiet moments from the around Mackay.

It’s easy to overlook what’s in our own backyard. The detail, the colour, the biodiversity — it’s all there if you slow down long enough to frame it properly.

If you’re a local council team, tourism operator, landscaper, environmental group, school or business within 4 hours of Mackay and need:
• Natural environment imagery
• Wildlife and habitat photography
• Promotional or destination content
• Project documentation
• Commissioned location shoots

I’m available for commissioned work and local assignments.

Professional, high-resolution imagery that tells a story about place — not just a picture.
Mackay and surrounds have plenty worth showcasing. Let’s capture it properly.

This image presents a wide, elevated view of the tropical seascape off Seaforth, Queensland, looking out toward the Whitsunday Islands on the horizon. In the foreground, the ocean shifts through layers of deep blue and translucent turquoise, revealing coral formations beneath the surface.
Soft, pale slicks of coral spawn trace gentle, flowing patterns across the water, carried by subtle tidal movement. A low, rugged island sits mid-frame, its rocky shoreline and sparse green vegetation providing a strong focal point against the surrounding sea. Beyond it, distant islands fade into the haze, reinforcing a sense of scale, remoteness, and calm. The scene captures a rare convergence of reef life and landscape, highlighting the quiet complexity of this part of the Queensland coast.

The photograph captures an aerial view of shallow tropical waters near Seaforth, Queensland, where the reef below is clearly visible through layered tones of turquoise, aqua, and deep teal. Darker patches trace the coral formations and reef structure beneath the surface, creating a textured, almost abstract pattern across the image.
Resting on the surface are pale, milky swirls of coral spawn, drifting in soft, ribbon-like lines with the ocean currents. These delicate patterns sit in striking contrast to the vibrant water below, marking a fleeting and critical moment in the coral’s reproductive cycle. The image reflects both the richness and vulnerability of the Great Barrier Reef, highlighting a natural process that is rarely seen and short-lived.

Milford sound trip was on our bucket list for so long, and we have ticked it off. Photos taken with a Canon R5 with Tamron lens and the flowers from my Samsung S24. Needed more days to explore, though.
