Almost at the end of nearly 3 years work on the Engineering and Innovation Place at James Cook University in Townsville by . I also had the pleasure of meeting on site when we were shooting for different clients. Big thanks to Richard Kirk, Jonathan Ward and for fascinating assignment.

Engineering and Innovation Place JCU

Ive being following construction of James Cook University’s new engineering building at the Townsville campus for the past two and a bit years.
Designed by in Brisbane the new build pushes the boundaries of what is possible when designing for the topics. From the architect - “The building’s form is entirely conceived in response to the site that is situated in an evolving context with climatic conditions that yield a unique architectural response specific to the tropics whilst establishing JCU as a knowledge Centre for tropical architecture.
Our approach to the building was to make a building that redefines what it means to build in the tropics – by allowing the façade to be entirely transparent from within and without relying on a large dramatic parasol roof conceived as a series of folded plates”.
It can attest to the success of its passive cooing - even on the hottest days there always seems to be a gentle breeze blowing through the giant central atrium.

Hats off the the team at BESIX Watpac and the various contractors that have struggled through 3 brutal summers, torrential rain and a recent mini cyclone to bring this building close to completion. I can’t wait to see the final result and as a bonus I will soon have a bunch of new locations to play with when shooting marketing images for JCU.
