Wallaman Falls - Girringun National Park, QLD, Australia

If you need a place to feel inspired - give Wallaman Falls a go.
It’s the highest single-drop waterfall in Australia at 268m. One of my favourite moments is when you first hike down and walk through the trees to stare up and get your first glimpse at this beast.

Horseshoe Falls - Tasmania
______________________________________

Just before we packed up shop for the morning of shooting this beautiful dappling of light came through to illuminate my foreground waterfalls! It only lasted long enough to shoot a couple of frames but that’s all it takes sometimes!

Some people often say as a photographer you need to be really lucky - but I also think you can prepare and plan to put yourself in positions and situations to have your best chance to get the luck!

It wouldn’t be a trip to Tassie without wombats! This was my first time visiting Tasmania, and the first time seeing wombats in the wild. Normally I stick to my landscapes… but I really got a kick out of wildlife photography on this trip! Tassie photo 2/15

It’s been a hot minute… and by that I mean it’s been 1.5years since my last post! I’ve still been shooting but… to be honest, my motivation to share photos on socials went down. Writing captions didn’t feel genuine anymore and often forced - so I stopped.
My wife Olivia was hard stuck on the other side of the country due to Covid lockdowns and border restrictions, with no idea when we would see each other again. This happened a few times over. And was harder each time. My life orientated around surviving each day or week, and having a healthy routine for my mindset.
I worked on myself a lot. I walked the dog a lot. I entered my first photography competition. I lost over 50kgs of weight, and kept it off. I started doing yoga. I became a runner. I caught a whole lot of Pokémon. I realized the things that were really important to me. My wife Olivia, my dog Baxter, our lives and future.
Now most importantly to this story- is that I have my wife back in Townsville, and this year has been infinitely better than the last 2 years. I’ve felt like posting again, and had a trip recently to Tasmania with to kick off my motivation to share again. So I hope you enjoy
Here’s my fav 15 photos from my trip. Kicking it off with a moody shot of the dove lake boat shed.

I loved the flow here! My camera is about 10cm above the water and my butt was accidentally 10cm into the water at the time of this shot. But I think it was worth it

It feels nice to be back in the groove of shooting. Now that overseas is off the cards for who knows how long - I’ve been enjoying getting back to exploring North Queensland and revisiting a few places I haven’t seen in years!

I sat at my car before starting the hike to Nandroya Falls and had a hard decision to make. To take my 100-400mm lens with me or not. An extra 1.5kgs in the camera bag. I couldn’t not take it. This could be the one day where a wild cassowary or echidna finally crossed my path! (Yes I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of hours hiking in the bush and rainforest in North Queensland and am yet to see either in the wild)
I’m very bad at minimizing my photography gear - I generally just take all bases covered and lug a bag full of bricks with me - because you never know what you could come across! So I made the commitment - I was going to shoot some fine detail shots on my walk with the 100-400 regardless of if an echidna showed up or not.

I’m really happy I did, this photo is a close up shot capturing the details next to the main falls at Nandroya Falls. It’s certainly going to have me looking harder for more opportunities in the future (there goes ever leaving a lens behind!)

Photography is a skillset that is constantly evolving. It’s amazing to see how I approach my compositions now compared to early in my photography journey.
Just under 2 years ago was my first visit to Nandroya Falls in Wooroonooran National Park! - I identified these rapids back then, and my composition and approach to taking a photo was entirely different to this time. I don’t like my old shot at all anymore. It makes me question how I ever shot it so strangely the first time and walked away happy with it. Who knows - maybe in another few years I’ll go back and think the same thing again about this one 😂

I’ve gone a little elephant ear plant crazy in my photography over the last few weeks. A few trips to the will do that though! This is - and it’s one of those compositions that I just got excited about going home to edit the moment I shot it!

Started out the hike to Windin falls in the pitch black before dawn with my friend Shelby! It’s been on my list of places to visit for awhile now. Sometimes the best part of being a photographer - is getting locations like this all to yourselves before most people even wake up!

I went for a sneaky solo trip on Friday morning to Wooroonooran National Park! After a few weeks of rain - and a few days since it had last fallen I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to see some raging waterfalls hopefully without the mud on the hike.
I loved this composition - and for anyone who followed my stories you could see it was a blinder straight off the back of the camera! This is the bottom set of Falls of Nandroya.

8 years today Olivia and me have been together. Happy real anniversary Liv (a wedding anniversary is a fake anniversary day after all 😂)
For those that don’t know us in person - Olivia and I are both dentists. Part of the reason I stopped posting regularly in the past 9months is we found out Olivia got accepted to become a specialist at Melbourne Uni. Whilst this is great for us in the long run - it does mean 3 years of doing a distance marriage. Which sucks. I stopped posting to spend more time with her while I had her in Townsville - and less on my phone.
Lately I’ve got a lot to be grateful for, despite everything going on in the world. COVID meant work was heavily restricted and almost shutdown - but Olivia got to be back in Townsville doing her course work over Zoom at home. I’ve been able to spend more time in the last 3 months with her than I probably will in the next 3 years. Last Wednesday she headed back to Melbourne, and once again I’ve felt less motivated to post. I just miss her.
But this ones for Olivia, from her little family of Me and Baxter 🐶 up in Townsville - who miss her more than anything. Thank-you so much for the sacrifice you are making for our future.
