The grace and power of a Wedge-tailed Eagle is surely a living, breathing definition of awe.

Once alerted that two wedgies were soaring directly over our house, I quickly grabbed my camera on my way outside to take in what is a truly special sight to behold.

These are the kinds of moments we work towards in my bird photography workshops - not just capturing the image, but learning how to recognise and respond to the moment as it unfolds.

Sitting by the birdbath, camera at the ready, comes with so many rewards.

In stillness, the breeze shifts through the trees and the sound of birds chirping is a peaceful thing… then, in an instant, everything changes. Wings lift, energy builds and you can feel the moment about to unfold. In that swift moment, camera up and shutter clicks! 🦅📷

It’s this balance of waiting and responding that makes bird photography so rewarding – learning to recognise when something is about to happen, not just after it does.

I’ll be exploring this and more in my bird photography workshops this May. There are still a few places available for those who feel drawn to spend time in these kinds of moments.

I’ve done a rather silly human thing while guiding a recent tour.

What does this mean exactly? Well… for the moment I’m paused by a moon boot because I broke an ankle! 😩
The good news is that I'm told it'll be a relatively straightforward recovery and I’ll be back soon, with workshops already being rescheduled and seated tuition sessions remaining available.

A brief update including what it means for upcoming experiences is over on the blog - find it via the comments.

🎤 In the meantime, tune into ABC Hobart at 7.50am tomorrow (Saturday 14th March) to listen to a little conversation I'll be having with Mel Bush about bird photography.

I helped to save a gull recently - not this one though. I was sifting through my photos when I came across this one and found myself reflecting on my feel-good gull-rescue moment.

◊◊◊

Wandering along a beach with Roy and a couple of friends, I noticed a fisherman struggling with a gull that had become tangled in the line he'd cast - all because there was a tempting piece of deliciousness attached to a hook at the end of the line.

Upon first inspection we weren't sure if the hook had snagged the gull... thankfully though, it hadn't. However, the line had wrapped around the bird several times with the hooked bait wedged awkwardly under one wing - it was the chunky piece of bait that actually saved the hook from snagging the gull, which it it had, it would definitely have caused considerable injury to the gull.

While the fisherman held the rod keeping tension on the line, I covered the gull's eyes and beak with a cloth and held his wings in gently and picked him up. We inspected what had happened and worked out that the line could be cut away from the hook and the simply unwound from around his body.

It wasn't long before the gull flew up up and way - just not before giving me a small peck on the hand, which I’m choosing to believe that was his way of saying thank you.

Sometimes photos of nature aren't meant to stand out... or just don't for one reason or another.

So I’m guessing that on socials this post may go largely unnoticed – by the algorithm or simply because it doesn’t demand attention as you scroll.

A patch of bark. Soft light. Subtle textures. Not magnificent in the usual sense – yet meaningful because of how it met you in that moment.

This is the spirit of our new Shoot With Me photo walks.

A couple of hours outdoors in nature with a small group of shutterbugs, noticing what we might usually walk past. Slowing down. Letting your own perspective of a light-hearted theme lead the way. Then heading home feeling creatively recharged and quietly restored, knowing you’ve set aside a little time just for yourself as the week begins.

If this kind of quiet noticing speaks to you, you can still join us - there’s time to book.

Looking to nurture your inner shutterbug? A chance to pause during the weekend and spend a little intentional time in nature with your camera?

This Sunday 25 January marks the very first Shoot With Me photo walk. ✨

Two hours outdoors with your camera. Guided by a theme, you’ll wander, notice the light and let your curiosity shape your way of seeing while shooting with me (Coreena). 😊 📷

Do camera settings tend to baffle you a little – or a lot? 🤔

Once upon a time, that was me (Coreena) – and sometimes still is, just far less often now. 🙌

In the beginning, I didn’t understand how everything worked together. I felt confused even when more experienced photographers explained how they made sense of it all. I remember wondering why it seemed to click for others but not for me. Even so, I stayed curious and motivated to learn and continued to fumble along the way.

Eventually, I met an incredibly knowledgable and patient someone who explained things in a way that finally made sense to me. Lots of practice and experimentation followed – and slowly my inner shutterbug grew in confidence. I’d found a way to progress and interpret what I needed to know.

That someone I mentioned, well that's Roy who became my husband and together we dreamt up and established Shutterbug Walkabouts.

These days, my learning journey shapes how I work with others – through private photography tuition, photo walks, day and multi-day tours, small group workshops and longer photography escapes.

Contrary to what some might say, you don’t need to start by figuring out all settings manually – or shoot in manual mode at all to call yourself a photographer. It takes time to build understanding and confidence in what and how you learn.
Learning step by step is more than enough. Trust your instincts, the process and your own way of making sense of things.

If you’re looking for patient, practical support tailored to how you learn, it would be an honour for us to support you on your photography journey with a Shutterbug Walkabouts nature-based photography experience.

📷 In one of my very happiest of places😁 It was a quiet moment with two incredibly gorgeous wombat joeys curious about the photos I was taking of them – they were orphans being expertly cared for by a wildlife rescue carer. So adorable 🥰

Anyone else more drawn to taking photos and enjoying the process than posting them?

For me, this is often a mix of time spent photographing and organising my images, balanced with being fully present while guiding guests through their experiences.

With an array of Shutterbug guest moments and my ever-growing collection of images from Tasmania, the rest of Australia and beyond, it often becomes a mind-boggling exercise deciding what to share… and I end up not sharing much at all 🙄

Surely I’m not the only one who finds social media quite the overwhelming space.

Perhaps 2026 is the year I share a little more – from the Shutterbug Walkabouts collection as well as from my personal image library🤞

Are you looking to increase your nature-connection in 2026?

Well, you’ll love our Shoot With Me Photo Walks... a new focus for a new year 📸✨

If you enjoy being out in nature with your camera and interested in spending intentional unhurried time photographing alongside others - with whatever camera you have or wish to use - this is for you.

It's not a workshop
It's not a lesson or tuition session
It's not a course

It's a relaxed photo walk in nature, designed to restore and nurture your inner shutterbug.

Shoot With Me Photo Walks are held on the last Sunday of each month. The inaugural walk is on Sunday 25th January and is open for bookings now.
