NAIDOC march … Darwin’s NAIDOC celebrations keep going from strength to strength. The march through the city on Friday attracted thousands of people and supporters – a great vibe followed by a party in the park near Brown’s Mart.

BARUNGA FESTIVAL … arguably Australia’s best Indigenous celebration. Sport, culture, music … this year’s festival had it all, along with a great vibe. Footy, basketball, spear throwing, a nightly bungul and a Battle of the Bush Bands. More than 5,000 people showed up at Barunga, south-east of Katherine to enjoy or participate in a great occasion.

¬DARWIN PRIDE FESTIVAL … the march through Darwin streets on Saturday was a colourful affair, full of positive vibes and good cheer. Not to mention a photographer’s delight!

FEJO AND THE CRUIZERS … winners of the Battle of the bands at Barunga Festival. A cool bunch of fellas from Ntaria/Hermannsberg, west of Alice Springs. Apart from a photo shoot and song-writing workshop with Troy Cassar-Daley, first prize was playing on the main stage. What a great performance from this band … the audience went off. Congratulations to the organisers and traditional owners. I have been to at least six festivals over the years and this was the best (except, of course, in 1988 when the Barunga Statement was presented – now, that was a moment).

BOOK TALK … on Wednesday May 13 I will conduct a book talk at the NT Library at Danala in downtown Darwin. It will be about my latest book Decades in Darwin Volume 2 – how it evolved and the stories I covered for various magazines from 2000 to 2020. This is a terrific venue with opportunity to display images on a large scale. All are welcome!

TOP END WRESTLING … a great show by Jake and the crew from TEW at Yarrawonga. I half expected Hulk Hogan or Mario Milano to jump into the ring but I reckon these guys were actually better. They really know how to entertain with plenty of action and some Vegas drama. In particular, the kids loved it!

SANDS STUDIO SHOWCASE … is a highlight of Easter in Darwin. While others go fishing, I pop down to Mayberry to catch some of Darwin’s best bands and musos. Tehana, Leah Flanagan, Zaza Zoo, Clink and EAST POINT were among my favourites. Well done Rowan Dally and the crew for organising the gig!
