LEGITIMATE TARGETS

During the 44-month Siege of Sarajevo, children were killed and thousands more were severely wounded by sniper fire and indiscriminate mortar attacks by the Serb Forces.

They were targeted by artillery and sniper fire while gathering water, playing outside and while attending or going to school. In line for bread and humanitaran aid. Even while attending funerals of their killed friends and siblings.

Schools were actively targeted by artillery. For instance, on November 9, 1993, a mortar shell struck the “Prvi maj” school in the Alipašino Polje area, killing four children and a teacher, and wounding 20 pupils. Another well-known tragedy occurred on November 10, 1993, when a shell killed five children playing in a schoolyard.

For them, we were legitimate targets and no child was spared. Serb Forces were onto us and didn’t hesitate to murder or injure kids no matter the age.

WAR TOYS

Children living through the 1,425-day Siege of Sarajevo (1992–1996) adapted to constant bombardment and sniper fire by making the war a part of their play.

Amidst the ruins, children built forts, used wooden toy guns, collected shrapnel and bullet casings and pretended to defend their city against the surrounding forces.

Children saw their fathers and defenders as role models, often playing war games that mirrored the frontline battles unfolding in their own neighborhoods.

Lacking standard toys, children fashioned toys out of the materials of war, playing with empty machine-gun cartridges, unexploded artillery shrapnel, and discarded shell casings.

As part of the cooperation between the Ministry for Veterans’ Affairs of Canton Sarajevo, the University of Sarajevo, and the WARM Festival, an exhibition by Mohsen Rastani, one of Iran’s most important documentary photographers, will be presented at the Sarajevo Memorial Center from June 4 to 17, 2026. The exhibition is curated by Lejla Hodžić.

The exhibition will open on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 7:00 PM at the Sarajevo Memorial Center (Širokac 1, Kovači, Sarajevo), in the presence of the artist.

Mohsen Rastani (1958) is an Iranian documentary photographer of the post-revolutionary generation. He graduated in photography from the University of Tehran. Throughout his career, he has documented social and humanitarian issues in various conflict and post-conflict environments, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he worked from 1994 until mid-1996, photographing Sarajevo, Tuzla, and Mostar. His work has been exhibited extensively in Iran and internationally, including at the Venice Biennale in 2011 and at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris in 2014. Today, Mohsen Rastani lives and works in Germany.

Mohsen Rastani is not a conventional war photographer. His photographs portray people during wartime, recording pain, suffering, and loneliness, but also brief moments of happiness. In his own words, photography is a medium for freezing time within a frame. Yet his images are full of life: a man still stands on one leg, a woman with a burned face is still alive, a child on the street looks back at the viewer with the gaze of an adult. Time is not frozen in any of these photographs.

Mohsen Rastani prints his nightmares, places them within square and rectangular frames, and shows us the profound bitterness of a world filled with catastrophe, reminding us not to forget our fears and nightmares. He attempts to awaken us in a world on the brink of disaster, while also offering hope that peace is possible.

For the first time in Sarajevo, the exhibition brings together a selection of 60 photographs made in Sarajevo and across Bosnia and Herzegovina during and immediately after the siege, between 1994 and 1996. Having arrived in Bosnia after documenting wars in Iran and Lebanon, Rastani records everyday life, the consequences of war, the first moments after the siege, and the people who continue to live despite destruction.

Created during the photographer’s extended stay in the city, these photographs represent a rare and intimate testimony by a foreign author about Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina at a moment of transition from war to peace.

U najnovijoj epizodi podcasta "Oštar stav", voditelj Jahja Muhasilović ugostio je Avdu Huseinovića – renomiranog bosanskohercegovačkog dokumentarista, novinara, kantautora i učesnika odbrane Bosne i Hercegovine.

a kad izgori, iz sna me bude
tvoji zlotvori.

Moja je sreća ostala tamo
gdje sam prvi put vidio dan.
Ni ljeta ni zime ne mirišu ovdje
mirisima koje znam.

Srijeda il’ nedjelja,
mene sunce tužno grije,
jer jedna je kuća tvoja,
sve su druge nečije.

Sve su tuđe,
samo tvoja jedna je.”

During the Siege of , playgrounds and parks around all buildings have been plowed for vegetable plots to combat Sarajevo's food shortage. Every patch of earth is planted and dirt even has been hauled to balconies and rooftops to grow crops.

People in suburban areas with gardens would grow vegetables they would share with their neighbors and they would give seeds to each other so they could grow some vegetables in flower boxes on their balconies too.

The first winter was the worst, there was a shortage of everything so people ate whatever they could make out of airdropped pasta or powdered milk. Most of the public space, pavements and gardens were taken up by vegetable patches.

People harvested vegetables in their back gardens and pavements during the long Siege of Sarajevo.
