On the occasion of World Photography Day 2026, the students of Pathshala invite you to join us in remembering and relearning Raghu Rai — not only as a pioneering photographer, but as a person whose life, relationships, curiosity, and way of looking continue to shape generations of photographers across South Asia.
In the months following his passing, we had the privilege of speaking to his family, looking beyond the photographs the world already knows and the public image of Raghu Rai. Through these conversations, we came across fragments of a more personal world — moments with friends and family, memories from different stages of his life, the influence of his mentor S. Paul, his sense of darshan, and his enduring, intimate connection with Bangladesh and its photography community.
This exhibition is our attempt to bring these fragments together — an unseen portrait of one of the most celebrated photographers. Rather than present his work as a finished legacy, we wanted to sit with the questions, memories, and encounters that shaped it. What shaped the way he looked? What stayed close to him? How did the people and places in his life become part of his visual language?
For us, Relearn is also an invitation — to return to the photographs, but with new understanding of the person behind them. In this process, we found ourselves asking
not only what Raghu Rai photographed, but what he carried with him. We would be honoured to have you join us.
