Morning routine : Stefan gets Dina ready in the morning. Cleaning and brushing is a calm start to the day for both of them before they head to the beach and go fishing.

Oostduinkerke Strand, Belgium. The North Sea hosts a rich biodiversity. Over 2000 species of animals and plants live in Belgium’s part of the North Sea, which is the biggest nature reserve in Belgium. As consequence of climate change the sea level of the North Sea will rise up to one meter. This signifies that Belgium’s coast will be flooded and will be uninhabitable.

The catch is cleaned of bycatch, which is then returned to the sea. A 2015 study published in Marine Pollution Bulletin found around 63% of grey North Sea shrimp tested contained microplastic fibres.

Stefan and his experienced cold-blooded horse Dina make their way through the North Sea in East Dunkirk, which is churned up by autumn storms. In autumn, the wind and waves become so strong that the fishers have to take a winter hreak until the following spring. When the north wind becomes too strong and the water presses against the beach, the fishers do not go out.

My story of the fishermen on horseback in Belgium is now published in Oceanographic Magazine issue 45. Text by Fabian von Poser.

For centuries, fishermen have been catching shrimp in the North Sea with horse and trawl net. For generations, man and animal have braved wind, weather and rough seas. The tradition was once widespread along the entire coast: in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Great Britain. In Koksijde near Ostend, horse fishing has been documented since 1502. Today, it is the only place in the world where shrimps are still caught by horse. The craft has been declared Unesco intangible world heritage since 2013. This centuries old tradition gives the community a collective identification and plays a central role in social and cultural events.

The story of the fishermen on horseback in Belgium, which I photographed, is now published in Oceanographic Magazine issue 45. Text by Fabian von Poser. Rob, thank you so much for the great collaboration!
