Unlike previously, focusing on one filmmaker, I wanted to look at the two most influential and most respected artists in the world of cinema: Stanley Kubrick and Andrei Tarkovsky. Both of them have defined and pioneered the cinematic language, and propelled cinema forward as an art form. This short comparison highlights their own unique cinematic style, in which to some extent, they share the same philosophical and thematic undertones in their filmography.

Dir. Joachim Trier. Norway, France, Denmark, 2015. 109 min

In what can only be described as the smoothest of transitions, Norwegian director Joachim Trier’s English-language debut finds him in top form, completely at ease with the language and fluently using to great effect the same subtle approach and lively visual grammar perfected in his two earlier films, Reprise and Oslo, August 31st. This story of the husband and two sons of a celebrated war photographer who try to find a common ground three years after her death in a traffic accident is richly detailed, sensitively played and cleverly mounted.

Marco Bellochio casts a bleary eye over the travails of masculinity in crisis in Sweet Dreams (Fai Bei Sogni) – and although the result isn’t an all-out nightmare, it’s not an idyll to rank with the Italian veteran’s best.

360 video:
The Guardian’s first foray into the world of virtual reality is certainly an immersive (and somewhat unsettling) experience that really tries to place those that experience it inside the headspace of those imprisoned in these facilities – as is explained in the following statement from an article on 6×9:

The purpose of 6×9 is to demonstrate, using immersive journalism, how being in long-term solitary can affect the mind of prisoners held in segregation around the world, an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 of them in the United States alone.

This method of storytelling is a highly effective way of highlighting the sensory deprivation that solitary confinement entails.

Take the 360 degree video experience of solitary confinement in US prisons, which places viewers in a virtual segregation cell they can explore and interact ...
