Benny Silabo: Kanye’s Street-Certified Legend
By Mpho Keoepile
In our community, we often spotlight leaders, entrepreneurs, and celebrated figures whose economic relevance places them in the limelight. Yet, woven into the everyday fabric of Kanye are local legends—men and women whose influence is undeniable, though less documented. One such figure is Benny Silabo, affectionately known as Ras Ben, a bona fide legend whose story deserves to be told.
The Musician
Whispers of Benny’s musical prowess are no exaggeration. A guitarist of elite skill, Ras Ben can outplay your favorite artist on any given day. Tales abound of him serenading tourists in Botswana’s North West, and these are not mere rumors—they are certified legends. His strings carry both rhythm and soul, leaving audiences spellbound.
The Martial Artist
Others recall Benny as a martial artist, and they too speak the truth. His shukukai-styled training shaped many young lives, including mine. At just eight years old, I was taken on 3km jogs and rigorous sessions under his guidance. His discipline and mentorship instilled resilience that still echoes today.
The Journalist
Benny’s golden pen is another chapter in his legend. With extraordinary perspective and a gift for deconstructing scenarios into compelling narratives, he co-founded Kanye’s first print media outlet, The Sports Mirror, in 1998 alongside his longtime friend Nico Kemokgatla. Ahead of its time, the publication captured the pulse of local sports and community pride during its run.
The Hustler
Beyond artistry and journalism, Benny embodies the spirit of hustle. Known as the “American twang street engineer,” he was one of the original mokwetsepe lunch stop innovators at Mongala bus rank. A maestro of odd jobs, he never turned down honest work. His friendliness and reliability made him the motsadi everyone trusted.
A Legend Among Us
Benny Silabo is more than a man of many talents—he is a living testament to Kanye’s resilience, creativity, and community spirit. His story reminds us that legends are not only found in boardrooms or stadiums, but also in the streets, bus ranks, and everyday lives of our people.
If you know of other local legends whose stories deserve to be honored, share them with us. Together, we can ensure that the unsung heroes of Kanye and beyond are celebrated for generations to come.
