Sir Seretse Khama was the first president of Botswana, a post he held from 1966 to his death in 1980. He was the grandson of Khama III the Good.He married an Englishwoman named Ruth Williams in 1948,He helped negotiate the terms of Botswana’s independence and promoted his ideal of a multiracial democracy. He also achieved free universal education and sought to diversify and strengthen the country’s economy. He was knighted in 1966.

Sir Seretse Khama was a barrister by profession. He studied law at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa and at Balliol College, Oxford in the United Kingdom. He was admitted to the Inner Temple on 14 October 1946 and continued his legal studies there. However, he was never called to the Bar or practised law in England or Africa1. His marriage to Ruth Williams and his exile from Bechuanaland prevented him from pursuing a legal career.
