I completely understand why the idea of waking kids up early for photos can sound overwhelming at first.

But sunrise beach sessions can actually feel surprisingly relaxed for families.

The beaches are quieter, the scorching hot sun hasn’t arrived yet, and there’s usually far less distraction than later in the day. Kids can explore, play, splash in the water, and settle into the experience naturally instead of feeling rushed or overstimulated.

This session was such a beautiful reminder that family photos really don’t need to be overly structured to create meaningful images.

Knowing they can play in the water and get their clothes wet usually means kids actually enjoy the session, and it helps parents take some of the pressure off too.

Lifestyle newborn sessions will always be some of my favourites because they capture so much of what families want to remember later on.

Not just how everything looked, but how those first few days at home actually felt.

The quiet nursery they spent months preparing.
Their tiny baby curled up in the crib that feels much too big for them.
Sitting in the nursing chair that will become such a familiar spot.

There’s no pressure for everything to be perfect during these sessions. Babies need breaks, and I always follow the pace of your family, which leads to images that document moments as they naturally unfold.

There’s something quietly emotional about kindergarten graduation.

It feels like such a small milestone until suddenly it doesn’t.

One minute they’re learning how to hold your hand crossing the parking lot, and the next they’re sounding out words in their favourite books, carrying their backpack proudly, and telling you all about their school day on the drive home.

That’s one of the reasons I love these Barrie Kinder Grad studio sessions so much; they capture your child exactly as they are at this meaningful milestone.

One of my favourite things about my home studio is how timeless the images feel.

The soft neutrals, the clean textures, the simple tones; it all comes together in a way that feels calm and natural. A style that truly stands the test of time and works beautifully on almost any wall.

There’s something about stripping everything back that makes the feeling stand out even more. The quiet moments, the closeness, the way people naturally settle into each other.

I really love working with young kids.

There’s something about this age that feels so honest. They’re curious, a little unpredictable, sometimes shy, sometimes full of energy, but my favourite part is that they just show up exactly as they are!

Kinder grad is such a meaningful little milestone. It might feel small in the moment, but it marks the beginning of a new season where their personalities really start to shine.

These photos aren’t about perfect smiles or sitting still. They’re about who your child is right now. Their expressions, their personality, the way they move and interact with the world.

That’s the part that matters most.

I think a lot of families expect studio sessions to feel more formal than they actually are.

But they’re usually much simpler than that.

The pace is slower. We take breaks when needed. Your baby doesn’t have to be sleeping soundly, and your kids don’t need to sit still the whole time.

I guide you through everything, but nothing is forced.

The goal is to create a calm space where your family can settle in and simply be together.

That’s when the photos begin to feel like you.

One thing I hear from parents all the time during a session is,
“Are we getting any decent photos?”

Usually because their kids don’t want to stand still. Or don’t want to look at the camera. Or just want to move the whole time.

But that’s actually how most sessions go.

While you’re focused on trying to get everyone to cooperate, I’m watching for the in-between moments. The way your child smiles when you reach for their hand, the little interactions, the way you naturally settle into each other.

Those are the moments that end up meaning the most.

You don’t need your kids to behave a certain way for your photos to turn out well.

The goal is to capture your family as you are right now, because these are the moments that will bring you back to this time and place, just as it felt.
