Fifteen years apart. Same river. Two historic moments.
These side-by-side images compare the Assiniboine River in May 2011 and July 2026 from the same locations.
The 2011 photographs were taken from a small airplane on May 11, 2011, when the river level was approximately 1,181 feet. A few days later, the river continued to rise and eventually crested at 1,182.89 feet, the highest level ever recorded in Brandon.
The 2026 photographs were captured by drone after the City announced the river had stabilized, reaching a peak of approximately 1,179.46 feet.
I did my best to recreate the original viewpoints as closely as possible. Because today's images were taken with a drone operating under current flight height restrictions, some angles are slightly lower than the original airplane photographs. Even so, I hope they provide a meaningful comparison of these two remarkable moments in Brandon's history.
Every flood is different, and water levels alone don't tell the whole story. My goal wasn't to compare which event was worse, but to document these two moments from the same perspectives, 15 years apart.
Thank you to everyone who shared memories on my previous post. I hope these images help preserve a small piece of Brandon's history.
