This was last of sixteen Dall rams I photographed in a single day in Alaska. It took me a couple days to find them but when I did I think I made the most of it. Sept 2025.

Today’s image is something a little different. It’s an environmental shot of the largest grizzly bear I’ve ever come across. I heard stories about there being a lot of grizzlies in this area and shortly after leaving the main road for a logging road, way up high on a large grassy slope, perched above a sandy cliff was a massive grizzly. You know it’s a big bear when you can see it plain as day up high from half a mile away. I pulled over and was thinking of a way to safely get closer. I couldn’t; it was about 300 yards away I figured. So I took the shots almost right from the road. I would have had to hike down a steep hill, cross a small river, and bushwhack through some trees and make it up that sandy cliff which I’m pretty sure I could have done with my poles, but not without it seeing me. The large male boar grizzlies hate people and being close to the roads. They become solitary creatures and are often nocturnal, so the temptation to get shots of a big one like this is there unfortunately. I’ll be going back for several days this year. Hopefully our paths will cross again, and hopefully I’ll be closer and get the shots safely.

I love it when the bucks in Lethbridge group together in full velvet. There were four nice whitetail bucks in total here but the most I could capture at once was three. Hopefully I’ll get lucky again this year. Sometimes I think it would be neat to be in Alaska in early August and get 4-7 huge bull moose in full velvet, but Denali is best in September.

I’ll never forget taking this once in a lifetime image. If you have driven the Spray Lakes Road or hwy 742 in Kananaskis Country Alberta you have passed by the serene beauty of Spillway Lake. Sometimes you know how your just driving and see something that takes your breath away, well this had me pulling over immediately. The smoke from the fires in BC was particularly thick on this day and it led to this unforgettable scene.

Here’s a handsome dall ram to start your day with. The dall ram is the symbol of Denali National Park in Alaska. Denali was created in 1917 to protect the dall rams from being overhunted. These dall rams are stunning but my favorite is still the provincial animal of Alberta: the Rocky Mountain bighorn.
