Johnson Lake & Cascade Mountain - It may be spring, but the Rockies mountains are slow to give up to warm weather. Trip to Johnson Lake near Banff Alberta Canada shows a still very frozen surface.

Nestled between the rugged skylines of Mount Rundle and Cascade Mountain, the unassuming shores of Johnson Lake are not to be overlooked. The 3 km loop offers a choice of upper and lower trails traversing forested pathways. Every viewpoint is an opportunity for an iconic photo of the lake shining between peaks. Hikers keen to walk further will find views of ancient hoodoos and even a century-old mountain cabin lost in time.

Swirling Waters - Just back from Huatulco, Mexico. Atop the hill at the Lighthouse Bays of Huatulco, this breathtaking vista of the Pacific Ocean and rugged coastline was inspiring. The swirling surf crashing on the rocks and the ocean colour was spectacular.

The fog finally cleared after four straight days. The frost build up on the tree branches certainly look like tentacles of a different kind.

Panorama of Harvard Glacier in College Fjord, Alaska. Harvard glacier is a large tidewater glacier in Alaska’s Prince William Sound. It has a face approximately 1.5 miles (2 km) wide and is about 300 feet thick. Unlike many other Alaskan glaciers that are retreating, the Harvard Glacier has been consistently advancing over the past century. Harvard glacier is located in Glacier Bay National Park and Reserve in Alaska USA.

Last day of 2025 warranted a visit to Griffith Woods Park and the Elbow river. Griffith Woods. A pleasure to hike on a warm winter day like it was today. Last week it was -27c and today it was +8c.

White-breasted Nuthatch - Visit to our local bird sanctuary saw this little White-breasted Nuthatch looking for a handout. I never give food to birds no matter the time of year, but some do and this little guy has been acclimated to being fed.

White-breasted Nuthatches are a common feeder bird with clean black, gray, and white markings, White-breasted Nuthatches are active, agile little birds with an appetite for insects and large, meaty seeds. They get their common name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside. White-breasted Nuthatches may be small but their voices are loud, and often their insistent nasal yammering will lead you right to them.

First off this is a reversed iPhone pano, starting down and moving up as opposed to the traditional left to right. Now a bit about the art piece and building.

This sculpture called “Wonderland”, or as i like to call it the “Really Big Freaky Head”, is a bent-wire portrait of a young girl’s head created by Jaume Plensa, a highly regarded Spanish sculptor. The 12 metre tall sculpture features prominently in front of the Bow building, in downtown Calgary. I left the person in the photo to give the Wonderland a bit of perspective.

The Bow Building itself is a unique structure. It’s crescent shaped form faces south to maximize exposure to natural sunlight and heat, improving energy efficiency. It features the largest architecturally exposed diagrid system of its kind in North America. This triangular steel framework not only enhances structural integrity but also gives the building its distinctive look.

This one I found in the archives. Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada is a glacier water fed lake and is most always a colour of spectacular turquoise green. Clear reflections are normally hard to get but with the right late afternoon sunlight and no wind, then Emerald Peak on the left and the Presidents Range in the centre reveal themselves in spectacular reflections.
