🏫 The Forgotten Red Brick Schoolhouse of Fiske, Saskatchewan

Standing quietly on the prairie, this beautiful old brick schoolhouse is a piece of Saskatchewan’s rural history. It was associated with Valley City School District No. 2656, serving children from the surrounding farming community.

Built during an era when small prairie communities were investing in permanent schools, the building’s ornate brickwork tells its own story. By 2009, it was no longer functioning as a school and had reportedly been used as a private residence.

Today, it stands weathered and largely forgotten — but those bricks once echoed with the voices of children, teachers, lessons, laughter and the everyday life of a prairie community. ❤️

Some abandoned buildings aren’t empty. They’re full of memories.

Wow! What a day! The weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of of crowds though! So many incredible vintage cars to look at, my favourite is always the cars and trucks from the 1920’s to 1930’s. The Kinsmen Car Show gets bigger and better every year here in Innisfail, Alberta !

The Parker Cabin 🪵 | Innisfail Historical Village

Built by Charlie Parker in 1928, this cabin was constructed as a home for his hired man’s family. It originally stood approximately one mile south of the Penhold overpass along what is now the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, before being moved to the Historical Village in 1977.

Inside, the cabin offers a glimpse into the everyday lives and craftsmanship of earlier generations, including handmade textiles like a Log Cabin quilt, made from approximately 1,000 individual pieces of fabric, and a Striped Utility Quilt that was brought to Canada by Ann Duncan’s mother in 1920 and later donated to the Village.

These aren’t just old household objects—they’re little pieces of family history, showing how people used what they had to create things that were practical, beautiful, and meant to last. 🤎

G.W. West & Sons General Store — a piece of Innisfail’s beginnings

Long before Innisfail became the community we know today, George Washington West arrived in the area in 1891, when the settlement was still known as Poplar Grove. On July 1 of that year, he opened what would become one of the community’s early businesses: G.W. West & Sons General Store.

For generations, the store was much more than a place to buy groceries. It became part of the economic and social fabric of early Innisfail, dealing in everything from general merchandise to hardware, lumber, furs, meat and grain.

The West family remained connected to the business for an impressive 77 years, carrying it through decades of change as Innisfail grew from a small pioneer settlement into an established Alberta community.

Today, the G.W. West & Sons General Store at the Innisfail Historical Village gives us a glimpse into that earlier era. Many of the artifacts displayed within it have a personal connection to the West family and help tell the story of the people who lived, worked and built their lives here.
