There is a term in web design for placeholder text that holds space without saying anything. Most corporate sustainability reports contain the visual equivalent. I call it Visual Lorem Ipsum. New post: Visual Lorem Ipsum: The Photography That Fills Space Without Saying Anything . Sean Bell

Most corporate sustainability reports contain the visual equivalent of placeholder text. It looks like evidence. It carries none. Here is what Visual Lorem Ipsum is and why it matters.

Most corporate reports score well on design. Fewer score well on the things that actually determine stakeholder trust. When I audit a report, I use six specific criteria. I have not set them all out in one place before. New post: What I Am Looking For: The Six Criteria of a Project Authenticity Audit

Project Authenticity scores corporate and ESG visual communications across six criteria on a 30-point scale. Here is what each criterion measures and why it matters to stakeholders.

Most corporate sustainability reports score well on production quality. Fewer score well on authenticity. Last year I mapped fifteen Western Canadian organisations against both. Four quadrants emerged. Here is where most of them landed — and what it takes to move.

Fifteen Western Canadian organisations. Two axes. Four quadrants. Most fell in the same place. Here is what the Visual Storytelling Maturity review found — and what it means for your next report.

Check out the new post, From One-off to Narrative, by Sean Bell. It explores why single images aren’t enough for ESG reporting and how narrative photo essays can transform the clarity and credibility of your story. If you want stronger visual impact in 2025, this is worth a look. Read more here:

Single images can’t carry the weight of modern ESG reporting. Narrative photography creates context, clarity and credibility by showing how work actually happens. This guide explains why photo essays matter and how organisations can integrate visual storytelling into their reports.

Whitby’s harbour wall

This was taken looking out toward the harbour entrance in Whitby. The light was low and the shadows stretched across the water, and the old lighthouse caught the last of the warmth. The small boat drifted through at the right moment, adding a bit of life to a quiet scene.

What I liked was the contrast between the still structure of the pier and the movement on the water. Whitby has its own mood. There’s history in the stone and a darker story tied to the place, but it’s calm when you’re standing there.

When you look at this, what draws your eye first — the lighthouse, the boat, or the mood of the scene?

A quiet moment in Whitby

I took this on the famous steps in Whitby. The light was soft and the tide was low, and this couple walked down the stairs at an easy pace. Nothing staged, i waited for them to pass and grabbed this shot courtesy of them. Just a simple moment that matched the feel of the place.

What I liked was the way the steps pulled down into the town and the sea beyond. The rooftops, the harbour wall, and the shape of the coastline all lined up without needing to move.

When you look at this, what do you see first — the couple, the town, or the view out to the water?

A moment on the streets of Calgary

I was walking through downtown when this scene unfolded. One person, moving through the curve of the structure, arms up for a second like they’d had enough of the day.

What caught my eye was the shape of the walkway and how it framed the figure. The curve, the lines, the contrast between shadow and the city behind. Nothing staged. Just a small moment that says more than it looks.

When you look at this, what do you notice first — the shape, the movement, or the mood?
