For everyone asking…This is what spring run off looks like on an average year compared with what we're currently experiencing 🌊

Every year as the temperatures warm and the snowpack begins to melt rapidly, spring run off occurs. The rivers and creeks swell and the color can become murky due to sediment, silt and decaying organic matter. This year we have higher than usual water levels and spring run off has accelerated early. This coupled with a deeper than usual snowpack and 3 days of rain has led to a bit of minor flooding around town.

The good news is we were prepared for this AND this means we're starting the summer season strong.

Just one reason why timing your visit right matters...🌊

Ultimately this depends on the goals of your visit and places you wish to visit. But here’s just one example around spring run off and water levels.

Every year as the temperatures warm and the snowpack begins to melt at a faster rate, we get larger volumes of spring run off which cause the Bow River to swell and lose it beautiful green/blue color temporarily as sediment is kicked up. If you want to see it at its bluest, timing your visit for after the majority of spring run off has occurred and the weather is more settled is the move. I've found late July to September to bring the prettiest colors although it's also beautiful in fall and winter.

The Bow River is absolutely raging rn!! 🌊

You can see just how high she’s come up at this spot! This is an extreme example given the river is at its lowest during the winter months but crazy nonetheless! For the majority of the year (late September-May) there’s a 2-3 foot bank here above the water level. When the river is at its lowest there’s even a bit of shore at the bottom. Between June to August the river tends to flow higher and with rapid spring run off it can often rise close to the top of this bank. Anyway here’s the river at her lowest versus highest levels!
