A historic and emotional day over in Alert Bay today, as the world’s tallest totem pole came down.

I remember being so amazed by this pole growing up especially my papa driving us around as kids to see it making it a tradition as I grew older to try visit it when I’m over in the Bay. So many memories are tied to this place — years of playing soccer in the field beside it and attending gatherings at the Big House just steps away.

Raised in 1973, the pole stood approximately 173 ft (52.7 m) tall. After more than 50 years, the decision was made to bring it down due to structural stability concerns.

It’s hard to see such an iconic part of the landscape come down, but I’m grateful for the memories, history, stories and connections that so many of us have with this place and for all the beauty we’ve had the chance to witness through the years.

I’m sure I’m not the only one with memories of this totem pole — if you have a story, a photo or memory to share, I’d love to hear it.

From my first bridal styled shoot at last year’s North Island workshop with Geoff Heith.

If I’m being honest, teaching has always pushed me outside my comfort zone. I always wonder if I’ll have something valuable to offer or if people will actually enjoy the experience. But spending the day with this small group of wonderful women made it all feel so easy. It never felt like “teaching”, it felt like creating together, sharing ideas, encouraging one another and having a lot of fun and laughs along the way.

It reminded me that some of the most rewarding experiences come from saying yes, even when they feel a little intimidating.

A North Island morning spent at Koprino Harbour (Dana’sax), witnessing the celebration of the return of IR10 from Western Forest Products to Quatsino First Nation.

To witness and document one of our neighbouring nations, the Gusgimukw, receiving their land back is something I won’t soon forget. Days like this become part of history and preserving these moments through photographs is a reminder that the work I get to do carries meaning far beyond the images themselves.

It made the day even more meaningful to share it with my brother, who was working as one of the crew boat operators. Moments like these remind me how connected our communities are and how many people come together behind the scenes to make historic days like this happen.

I look forward to sharing more from this day as this is just a tiny snippet of the travel and preparation.
