Today....today is all about seals. Graceful and clumsy all at once, at times hilarious and at times ferocious, these marine mammals are always a delight to photograph, and I've been fortunate enough to spend countless hours over the years documenting their antics.

Interesting fact, however: I have yet to have the opportunity to photograph seals in my own Atlantic Canada. The seals you see here are from Antarctica, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands, and Namibia. Hopefully someday!

"The Fortress of Shadows"

The lands of my ancestors (at least on my mother's side) are the southern portion of the Isle of Skye in Scotland, where the Clan MacDonald of Sleat ruled the lands off and on for centuries.

This castle, Dunscaith - also called the "Fortress of Shadows", played a large part within the history of the MacDonalds, and from the laster part of the 14th century until the early 17th century was an inmportant part of their history in the area.

Today, weather conditions were photographically spectacular, here on the Isle of Skye. The afternoon just cycled through a routine of sun, cloud, rain, sun, rainbow, rinse repeat for about three hours. Mind-blowing, and so incredibly beautiful.

A little deviation away from my usual combination of portraits and landscapes.

These past two weeks I've been roaming the streets of Siena, Italy. Anyone who's been here knows that it's just a magical place within the Tuscany region of Italy.

One of the cooler experiences I've had in the last five years was completing this: the Shackleton Traverse (also known as the Shackleton Walk), which retraces the historic 1916 rescue route of polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.

It's in South Georgia, which is a remote island located in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 800 miles (1,390 km) southeast of the Falkland Islands and roughly 1,300 miles east of Argentina.

I've always been a bit of a history lover, and to retrace his steps across this rugged and remote terrain was truly a special memory.
