Two moods. One hunter. 🦉

From tangled perches to open sky, this Short-eared Owl owns every inch of this Delta landscape!

The first frame? Still. Watching. Calculating.
The second? Pure intent in motion.

Captured near Delta, BC with the Nikon Z8 + 180–600mm.

What I love about Short-eared Owls is how low they fly - quartering the fields just above the grass before vanishing into the muted winter tones. If you blink, you’ll miss it.

If you’re into raw wildlife moments, please follow along! More to come from my recent travels to BC and an upcoming trip to Northern Alberta is planned - stay tuned.

Blink and you’ll miss it… or nap through it.

Two Short-eared Owls in the fog of Delta, BC - one mid-hunt, the other clearly on a well-earned break 😴

Captured small in frame at 900mm (600mm + 1.5× in-camera crop on the Nikon Z8), these images were about letting the atmosphere lead. Fog softening the scene, distance adding tension - and yes, one owl fully embracing the slow life with its eyes closed like it hit snooze - even if only for a few seconds.

Short-eared Owls hunt low and fast, appearing and disappearing in seconds. Catching a quiet moment like this - especially one that feels almost human - felt just as special as the action!

Great Grey Owls often hunt from elevated perches, relying on sound to pinpoint prey beneath the snow. This one spent long stretches completely still, letting winter do its thing. Sometimes the best strategy is patience!

Winter stillness, broken only by a watchful gaze.

Nearly a year ago, I had the chance to photograph this Great Grey Owl as it perched low to the ground, quietly scanning the snow below while hunting.

This was one of those moments where everything slowed down: muted colours, fresh snow, and a bird completely at home in the Alberta cold.

Golden hour turned the valley into something unreal - fog rising like smoke and trees fading into layers of gold. Each frame from this evening felt softer than the last.

Two of Alberta’s winter icons in one post.
A Great Grey Owl and a Snowy Owl - both photographed here at home over the past year!

As the year comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting back on the early mornings, frozen fingers, long drives, and moments where everything aligned for just a few seconds. These encounters are why I keep heading out when the forecast looks questionable and the odds feel slim.

Grateful for another year of time in the field, wild places, and everyone who’s followed along, shared kind words, or stopped to learn a little more about these incredible birds. Winter is far from over, and there’s plenty more to come!

Was a pleasure to photograph this tiny pygmy owl this past weekend! These owls are about the size of a pop can and are efficient hunters that can take down prey three times their size.

This beautiful Elk was photographed early in the morning near Banff National Park. It is always exciting seeing wildlife - especially when the scenery or background matches the beauty of the animal itself!

This Great Grey Owl was photographed in Cochrane, AB. I was able to photograph it hunting for roughly an hour. I remember how cold it was that day but none of that mattered in the excitement of the moment.

Some recent (low resolution) owl photographs taken in Alberta last weekend. This great grey owl had no issues saying hello! The red background is from a rustic old wooden barn.
