Thank you to everyone who followed along this month as I posted highlights from our trip! I would be remiss if I didn't post something about the incredible group be travelled with. Greg at was our fearless leader who planned and organized everything and gave me an abundance of photography advice. If anyone is looking for an Africa trip, I strongly recommend checking out a trip with him. The other individuals in our group contributed to making this a trip of lifetime, that I will never forget. While not wildlife, these are some of my favourite images of our group and myself from the trip. Thanks for wandering with me!

Many of my recent posts have featured predators, but the prey species deserve love too! Some of the more common species were impala, Grants gazelle, and Thomson's gazelle, we saw hundreds if not thousands of each. Something that continually amazed me in Kenya was the sheer number of animals and how different species were able to coexist in the same immediate area. It wasn't uncommon to see two, three, four, or more species all grazing together.

1) waterbuck
2) dik dik
3) Coke's hartebeest
4) impala
5) Thomson's gazelle

The other mornings that stood out for lion sightings were our last two days in Africa. Both days we saw a pride trying to hunt. We watched as the sun rose and they stalked and waited, before calling it quits and walking away to spend the day in the shade. On both of these mornings, we had the sightings to ourselves. One of the days we followed the pride down into a valley where their cubs were waiting. We watched them drink from the river before continuing on their way. The other morning we watched the lionesses play, one found a feather and the chase was on!

A few lion sightings stand out from the rest, one morning was definitely a favourite. Our guide spotted a pride including some young adults that were digging into a mound in the earth. The guide said the lions were going after hyena cubs that were in a den. They dug around for a few minutes before continuing on their way. They stopped to play, scratch themselves on trees, and observe their surroundings. The way the light hit them that morning made it special. I also liked the younger males whose manes were not fully grown and it was like they were scruffy teenagers who couldn't grow a full beard yet.

Two of my favourite animals from our whole trip were this leopard and her son. We saw them on a few occasions and the young cub was so mischievous, pouncing on mom, chasing her tail, and standing on her head while she was trying to find dinner.

Ostriches are the largest living birds with males standing up to 9 feet and weighing up to 350lbs. While on Crescent Island in Lake Navaisha we got to see ostriches up close and one even followed mom around part of the island. In the Masai Mara we witnessed an ostrich mating dance where the male crouches down, alternates bringing his black-and-white wings forward, while bobbing his neck around trying to attract a female. The male we watched tried for a few minutes, but all of the females ignored his attempts.

Witnessing a cheetah hunt was pretty high on my list of things wanted to see in Africa. Most of the times we saw cheetahs they were in the shade of acacia trees, hiding from the beating sun. On one occasion we watched a cheetah stalk a group of impalas and gazelles. The cheetah only got a short chase in before one of the prey alerted the group to the cheetahs presence and the hunt was abandoned. Photographing cheetahs presented a different challenge than many of the other animals. Cheetahs are most active and hunt during the day, so we battled heat interference resulting in many fuzzy images.

As promised, these are some of my favourite images of the young elephants. The babies were challenging to photograph as the herd would keep the young in the middle, always protecting them and keeping them close.
