Acre designed this pavilion performance stage in Fredericton’s historic Garrison District to be able to be a flexible space for performers, dancers, speakers and all of it while not blocking the views of the sky and (depending on your vantage point) the river beyond.
Primarily constructed of cor-ten steel, perforated to both be a light installation on the square and also break down the volume itself, we also created a wood backdrop for the performers, partly for acoustics but also so that the audience has a nice backdrop to the amazing bands that have already graced this stage! First up was Acre favourites !

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗙 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗶 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁?

COR-TEN® steel is durable, but graffiti can still pose a challenge. Here’s how you can address it:

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 – these can effectively remove spray paints and markers. Always rinse the area with clean water afterward.

𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗯𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 – for more severe cases, sandblasting removes the patina and returns the steel to its original state. Over time, exposure to weather will allow it to develop a new, protective patina layer again.

𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗿 – if graffiti is a recurring issue, applying a clear lacquer after the patina has fully developed can make cleaning up future tags much easier.

COR-TEN® steel can stand up to weather, time—and graffiti. These methods can help maintain its appearance and integrity while addressing unwanted tagging.

And hey, if it is a 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀𝘆... maybe let it stay.
