Well, it’s been awhile! It’s been a long few months that started with watching the Olympics as a fulltime job 🤣 and ended with a separated shoulder from hockey. BUT, I’m getting back to editing the many images waiting for me on my Mac.

I always appreciate the support of my work!

Broadnose Sevengill Cow Sharks are incredible fascinating animals. There are so many unique features about them starting with the fact that they have seven gills compared to the usual five that most sharks have. They also don’t have a dorsal fin, in the traditional way that we see dorsal fins on sharks; large, prominent and close to their pectoral fins. These sharks have a very small dorsal fin, that’s located just before their tail. Their teeth are also incredible unique, with their bottom teeth resembling combs.

Seeing them is an absolute gift and they truly feel like living dinosaurs.

Thank you to my dive buddy for this special moment.

The Hunt for the Great White

I had been aggressively pursuing a great white in South African waters since the first day I arrived 11 years ago. I left my job to pursue the dream I’d had since I first watched Jaws at the age of 4 or 5 - to work with sharks. I found myself assisting the research team at Oceans Research in Mosselbaai with a variety of research projects. Just two days prior to my arrival, they had seen a pair of orca in the bay, which was thrilling. Unfortunately for me, not only did I miss the orca, but I spent a month chumming for great whites that would never come. This was the first time they would elude me.

The dream!

It’s been 5 days and I can still hardly put this less than once in a lifetime experience into words.

Stills to come soon!

On the way to our Shark Dive today we saw a massive Blue Blubber Jellyfish bloom with thousands of individuals. With a beautiful blue hue, their colourings remind of Blue Sharks. White and a vibrant, other worldly blue.

This is my first time seeing s proper bloom like this here, after 11 years of diving here, so it was a very welcome sight to see.

This day was a memorable day for so many reasons. It was a day between two expeditions when those of us who stayed for two had a rest day….but how can you rest when there’s whales!?

My roomie, Dani and I headed out to see what we could find and after coming back from very rough offshore conditions, we found this relaxed mom and calf in the shallows close to a small island. This approach was one I think about ALL the time. An approach so slow, you stare at the mom and calf unsure if the calf is actually starting to ascend, or if your eyes are simply playing tricks on you. This beautiful calf rose slowly from her mother’s side on the rippled sea floor. Pecs outstretched like a ballerina. We had this one beautiful pass that made a laughable bonus day worth it. 👐

This is one of my favourite images I’ve ever created thus far and these moments are so special.

Huge thank you to .jensen.photography for the incredible expedition as always.

Life has been busy lately, but I’m back, I’ve been able to spend some time editing and can’t wait to show you some new images.

As always, your support is much appreciated!

In just over two weeks, I’ll be back in the water here with these beautiful sharks. Aliwal is always an adventure and I cannot wait to see what Mother Nature chooses to show me this time around.

One of those perfect days where the light is just right, mom is relaxed and baby is curious. The anticipation of waiting on the surface, floating motionless, awaiting the approach by the calf and eventually mum is like no other.

It’s been a busy few weeks, but I was able to get back to it with this image. I created this image in 2022 in Bimini, the Bahamas. It’s funny how images you’ll scroll past for heads can stand out to you later.

There are times while swimming with the Atlantic Spotted Dolphins off of Bimini, that you feel completely enveloped by them. They’re in every direction, diving down, jumping, twirling with you and interacting with each other. It’s a purely magical moment.
