I'm about to start making new guides on how I capture VHS tapes but before I do, I'd love to get some feedback.

Have you tried to digitze your home movies?

Have you thought about it but never started?

No matter where you are in the process, I'd love to hear about your experiences and questions in the comments. The more feedback I get, the better I can make my guides.

So many people still have their old home movies trapped on the original formats which are now aging and failing. Getting your home movies digitized means having those cherished memories preserved in a modern format that's easy to watch and also easy to share with loved ones.

I'm now offering digitization/transfers for VHS, VHS-C, MiniDV, 8mm film, Super 8 film, DVD, and Mini DVD with plans to add Hi8 in the future.

There are a lot of companies out there that can digitize your home movies for you but one big thing that sets me apart is quality. Not only do I capture the footage but I also use professional editing software to enhance the audio and video quality. This takes a lot of extra time and is something that many large companies don't do.

Next year I'll be breaking my digitization services into three tiers of Basic, Standard, and Premium with the biggest difference being the level of enhancements applied. For now though, I'm keeping things simple and everything's getting the Premium level of enhancements at the same low price as the Basic service.

For the rest of 2025 I'm offering VHS, VHS-C and MiniDV digitization for $25 per tape, 8mm and Super 8 film for $0.40 per foot, and DVD or MiniDVD for $10 per disc. VHS tapes don’t last forever, and not all transfer services deliver the same results. I think I can do better than a lot of the larger companies and want to put it to the test. I'm offering to digitize a few tapes for free to compare quality, but this is a limited offer. Comment below or tag a friend who might be interested.

I shot these photos a few weeks ago for Cody Drake's upcoming solo album. I'm really happy with how these turned out. Having a plan in place makes a huge difference.

Cody had already done a ton of the planning before he even reached out to me. By the time I sat down with him to discuss the photos he already knew he wanted them taken at the Rockwood Conservation Area. We spoke for a couple hours while listening to his album and discussed what this photoshoot would look like. We discussed the meaning behind each individual song as well as the album as a whole, went over a ton of different poses, and talked about what the overall mood and message of these photos would be. This was time well spent and helped me to make informed decisions both while shooting and editing the photos.

Also the album sounds great. I've listened to an early version of it over a dozen times by now and it sounds amazing each time. I'm not sure when it'll be finished and released but I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.

JVC VCRs are failing are failing thanks to the Dynamic Drum System. Time to fix that with a Pi.

Just modded my VCR!

Earlier this year I purchased a high end VCR so I could digitize old home movies for my customers.

It's amazing in almost every way but it's got one feature that needs to be disabled, the dynamic drum system.

Basically the DD system helps keep a clear image while rewinding and fast forwarding but doesn't impact image quality during playback. A cool feature at the time but the big issue is that it's now about 3 decades later and failing gears in the DD system are causing JVC VCRs to break.

Luckily there's a talented guy who makes emulation boards that bypass the DD system to ensure that these VCRs will keep working and keep delivering amazing results for years to come. Luckily the install isn't too complicated either.

It's always cool when old tech meets new and I'm grateful that this VCR should now last a lot longer than it would have otherwise.

If you're in the Guelph area and are looking to have your old home movies digitized shoot me a DM. VHS tapes weren't designed to last this longer so the sooner your home movies are preserved, the better.
