It's almost impossible to watch a sunset and not dream. - Ben Williams
Which golden hour angle gives the best portrait vibe? This month's homework for with was to capture a model from various angles during the golden hour and compare the effect of the lighting. Eadan was a perfect model for this task! Can you tell which direction Eadan is facing in each photo? Look closely at the light and shadows to determine this, while remembering that the sun sets in the west. Swipe through for descriptions to see if you were correct.
Eadan stands in the east, facing west to the setting sun. The soft light directly in front of her gives a flattering consistent warmth to her face.
Eadan stands in the north, facing south. The sun to the west gives her a soft glow on the left side, while the right side is slightly shadowed.
Eadan stands in the south, facing north. This time the glow is on her right side while the left is shadowed.
Eadan is seated in the west. We are able to see the sunset behind her but in natural light without editing her entire face would be shadowed.
You see here the effect when I do not edit to lighten her face, because all light is behind her.
My conclusion: Facing west provides an even and very flattering lighting, facing north or souths adds more dimension and visual interest, and facing east requires editing to light the face, unless the focus is directed at the sunset rather than the model.
Thanks for this challenge Bella. It was a wonderful refresher on golden hour lighting. Happy Thursday dolls!
