Black bear family. Vancouver Island, 2026.

Coastal bears forage the beach at low tide for shell fish, especially in the spring. This momma bear was trying to teach her young cubs this tradition but they wouldn't stop rough housing with each other. Eventually she had to pick one up and remove it from the situation.

Turkey vultures. 2026.

These incredible birds are earths natural cleaners. They have a keen sense of smell and great eyesight that allows them to easily find carcasses. A stomach with acid 100x stronger than ours, they can digest almost anything. They have bald heads to stay clean while feeding and to cool off.

This group was feeding on a black bear carcass.

Cow Elk and calf. Rocky Mountains, 2026.

On this day in early summer I was able to be discreet enough that the herd was unaware of my presence and went on with their regular routine. I watched this calf get milk, take naps, and be social with the other calves. All during sun showers.
